Director of Research and Development: (Non-Profit Organization)
This is an opportunity for a skilled science executive to utilize your experience and "give back" in a humanitarian organization where your participation could have enournmous impact in the global need for affordable drugs and diagnostics. This position can be worked remotely from a home office location.
The Director of Research and Development (DRD) will oversee a portfolio of technical initiatives to optimize pharmaceutical products for Developing Market use. The DRD should possess, or will be expected to rapidly develop, deep knowledge of and strategic perspectives on supply-side issues pertaining to access to medicines—areas including drug pricing, drug development (new drugs, improved formulations of existing drugs, and generics), drug manufacturing, regulatory issues, and procurement practices. The DRD will be expected to be a thought leader on product development and market introduction related issues, and be held accountable for showing substantial results in relatively short time frames. The DRD will develop and execute strategies for developing novel formulations and new doses of existing products, and translating that development into the approval and launch of products in the marketplace. The DRD will draw upon expertise of members of the Access Team and external partners, and, where expertise is lacking, enhance it through recruitment of appropriate volunteers or consultants. The DRD will be responsible for representing us on access-to-medicines issues both internally and externally and will cultivate strong relationships with senior executives of pharmaceutical companies, research organizations, and regulators. This position will working closely with and report to our Chief Scientific Officer.
Responsibilities:
· Oversee a portfolio of technical initiatives to optimize pharmaceutical products for Developing Market use.
· Develop and execute strategies for developing novel formulations and new doses of existing products, and translate that development activity into the approval and launch of products in the marketplace.
· Develop strategy for market introduction and uptake of new formulations, including doing analytical work to develop business cases for new product introductions.
· Identify appropriate development partners to conduct RD work to support the development of new pharmaceutical products and monitor and direct research at those partners.
· Develop relationships with pharmaceutical manufacturers and regulators to support the commercialization and regulatory approval of new pharmaceutical products.
· Identify and pursue funding opportunities.
· Manage a technical team of Ph.D. level experts already conducting research programs.
· Represent organization at relevant meetings with external parties and conferences.
· Be available to travel up to 25% of time.
Qualifications:
· Ph.D. or MD in a technical field related to pharmaceutical development.
· Minimum 8 years private sector work experience.
· Exceptional analytical (qualitative and quantitative) and communication (written and verbal) skills. Ability to communicate effectively with people of varied professional, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
· Entrepreneurial mindset, including ability to work independently, self-motivate, and propose and implement new initiatives.
· Ability to be effective in high-pressure situations, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and set priorities.
· Strong desire to work in a fast-paced, limited-structure, high-pressure, multicultural environment.
· Ability to absorb and synthesize a broad range of information, including financial, regulatory, clinical and scientific information.
· Experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or medical device industry.
· Experience managing the implementation of complex projects across multiple time zones.
· Solid familiarity with business principles, strategy, and terminology.
· Detail-oriented with strong organization skills.
· High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
· Willingness to travel.
· Fluency in English.
