Local Editor, Newtown Patch Job in Newtown 06470, Connecticut US

About Patch:

Communities use Patch every day to make navigating local life easier and more informed. We provide the neighborhood news and information you must know; the best things to do; ways to buy, sell and save money; and a platform to connect and share with your neighbors. And we need your help.

About Editorial:

Our editorial team is looking for people who have the passion, creativity and chops to engage their local community through dogged reporting, professional editing and thoughtful content curation. We need journalists who can also leverage an array of new technology, tools and social media.

As a Local Editor, you’ll become part of a dynamic and innovative team of journalists, engineers, designers and business professionals, creating a bold new solution for our industry. You will have the exciting chance to manage and run your own site--for all things local in your community--effectively informing and delighting our Patch users. This is an opportunity to not only transform journalism, but to improve the lives of your community members.

Your Role:

    •    Report, utilizing multimedia skills, and create original content for the site

    •    Manage and curate content on your Patch -- in every form that takes (website, newsletter, etc.)

    •    Build a community online and get people addicted to your site

    •    Encourage user-generated content and community involvement, including recruiting a variety of contributors

    •    Be collaborative across all aspects of the company -- marketing, sales, editorial, etc.

    •    Interact, engage, reach out, and otherwise be peripatetic and ubiquitous in your community

    •    Be invested in the success of your community -- write for the community, not about the community

Your Qualifications:

    •    Entrepreneurial spirit and drive; start-up experience a plus

    •    Experience in online community building -- using tools and strategies for seeding conversations and engaging with your users

    •    Comfort with being a leader/local celebrity in the community, not merely an observer but a participant

    •    Demonstrated ability to manage your time, as well as plan and prioritize your work

    •    Flexibility and a willingness to change directions

    •    Passion for -- and adept skill in -- writing for the web, social networking and community journalism

    •    Understanding of the value and impact of carefully curated and aggregated content

    •    Ability to report on a tight deadline -- degree in journalism a plus, but not required

    •    Great news judgement and the ability to tap into the interests, rhythms and identity of a town

    •    “Bull-doggish” reporting instincts and a willingness to ask tough questions of important people

    •    Understanding of copyright and libel laws

    •    Car ownership (a must) and flexibility to work from anywhere -- be it at home, from your car, at a coffee shop or the high school football game

    •    Willingness/ability to live in or damn close to the relevant market location

    •    Experience recruiting, managing and motivating a team of contributors is a plus
