Position: Messaging Consultant
Overview
The Messaging team support the corporate infrastructure for mail, instant messaging and fax transmission within the UK. This currently includes Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, Blackberry Enterprise Server, Office Communications Server, Lotus Sametime, Ironport, Kofax Axs One. Other technololgies are expected in the near future, such as iPad integration.
The Bank is currently undertaking their largest ever messaging project, the migration of 22,000 users globally from Notes to Exchange. This includes 4,500 users in the UK.
Role
The consultant is expected to give help support to a small team during the transition from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange. A high level of knowledge and experience is MS Exchange is required; a working knowledge of Lotus Notes would be advantageous since the bank expects to maintain co-existence with the rest of the bank for an indefinite period going forward.

These services are provided to the bank on-site between the hours of 0700 – 1800 Monday to Friday with an on-call rota outside of these hours for critical services.
The position encompasses a high level of skill, as the consultant will be expected to perform tasks which are technical and require real-world experience. The consultant will report to the messaging production manager and their role is to be both a point of reference for other members of the team, to implement new and often complex projects and also give help to less experienced members of the team, helping out with support issues as business needs dictate.
The consultant is expected to be part of the on-call rota outside of the core hours for critical services. It will not always be necessary to work set hours during the core business day, since the consultant will be focussed on achieving deadlines rather than working for set time periods. However the consultant may be required to begin work at 7:00am as support requirements dictate.
Services to be provided
The consultant will provide the following services;
- Participate and act as technical lead on the design, engineering and deployment of new services or enhancements/upgrades to existing services.
- Execution of complex technical changes to the environment under appropriate change control procedures. These complex changes will generally have been planned and co-ordinated by the consultant himself.
- Provide input and participate in the design of enhancements upgrades to existing services.
- Perform technical changes to the environment under appropriate change control procedures
- Pro-active ways to improve the efficiency and management of the environment, and then assemble practical ways of implementing any suggestions.
- Break fix support of the technologies supported. Although there is already a messaging team in place not all have Exchange experience and the rapid transition from Notes to Exchange is expected to lead to some “organisational pain”.
Day to day requirements
- Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Exchange together with broad knowledge of Internet message routing and interoperability between internal mail system and those of external companies
- Knowledge of Instant Messaging platforms (corporate and public domain) and their interaction with complex auditing systems.
- Some knowledge of Fax SMS architecture, particularly with reference to links to other applications.
- Some knowledge of Lotus Notes architecture.
- Good communicator, able to get over complex technical concepts to a range of audiences, both technical and non-technical.
- Self-starter capable of organising their own time and that of others in an efficient fashion to plan deliver complex projects.
- Work co-operatively with the other members of the team.
- Ability to mentor, teach and organise the time of messaging analysts
- Able to write and update documentation reports.
- Ensure adherence to processes and procedures whilst exercising a suitable attention to detail.
- Apply own initiative within the levels of acceptable risk.
- Whenever in doubt, escalate and seek advice and guidance.
- Escalate risks issues to the manager of the team
- Minimise operational failure, including but not exclusively, the risk of fraud, by helping to devise, and by implementing, sufficient regular controls.
- Ensure appropriate escalation to management and/or Permanent Control (or Compliance as appropriate) as soon as an issue is identified.
- Provide a direct contribution to the operational permanent control framework.
