Substance Abuse Counselor

Summary Performs highly complex substance abuse counseling work. Work involves planning, coordinating, and implementing substance abuse counseling activities, and coordinating with other departments, divisions, agencies, and community organizations to ensure the maximum utilization of resources available for chemical dependency treatment and rehabilitation. Works under general direction with extensive latitude for the use of individual initiative and judgment. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Interviews, screens, and evaluates inmates for potential program participation; provides substance abuse counseling and educational services; and implements follow-up and aftercare programs. Compiles data and submits reports, related documentations; maintains offender records to include assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and discharge plans; and disseminates information on resources for follow-up treatment. Provides technical assistance and maintains inmate records and documents pertaining to the services provided, to include, an inmates attendance, progress, and additional needs. Performs moderately complex work involving the care and custody of inmates. Maintains security and/or order among inmates of the institution through direct supervision. Responsible for preventing escape and maintaining discipline in conformance with strict rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. Requirements Minimum Requirements Graduated from an accredited college or university with Bachelors degree Behavioral Science or related field, or LPC, LCDC, LPCC, or equivalent certification. One year full-time, wage-earning experience in Substance Abuse Treatment preferred. Preference given to experience within a correctional setting. Working knowledge of the Twelve Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
