Role Summary/Purpose
The Senior Infrastructure Architect – UNIX / Linux Engineering role will be a member of the GE Global Infrastructure Services (GIS) Compute Engineering team. The candidate will work collaboratively with their team and across GE to create physical and virtual Solaris and Linux based infrastructure solutions. The candidate will leverage deep technical skills and experience with Solaris, Linux and *NIX Virtualization to design intelligent, optimized architectures.

Essential Responsibilities
The Senior Infrastructure Architect – UNIX / Linux Engineering role will be expected to:

  • Provide technical leadership in Solaris, Linux and *NIX Virtualization initiatives and platforms
  • Lead advanced projects to introduce and implement new technology, understanding the technology on an expert level, and how to optimally apply it to meet business needs
  • Provide technical expertise regarding integrating new and existing Unix, Linux and *NIX Virtualization technologies into enterprise IT systems design and architecture
  • Effectively communicate, consult, and interface with engineering, virtualization, tools, operations, and application teams to design innovative infrastructure solutions
  • Develop and implement best practices and engineering standards for Solaris / Linux / *NIX Virtualization configuration and optimization
  • Understand and perform monitoring, capacity planning, and coordinate server growth and migrations
  • Awareness of current and emerging tools, techniques, and products for Solaris and Linux, the technologies and a deep understanding of how they best integrate into an overall technical architecture
  • Be comfortable conducting meetings, and creating and presenting professional grade deliverables such as technical architecture documents, technical drawings, and presentations
  • Develop cost models, business cases, and appropriate cost management for Solaris / Linux / *NIX Virtualization server hardware and software technology implementations and ensuring the proper liquidation and allocation of hardware and related data center costs
  • Conduct project reviews, feasibility, cost benefit analysis, prioritization, initiation, execution for all project related work related to assigned programs and projects
  • Work with various GE business units, constituents, and CTOs to insure proper business alignment between business strategy and configurations, integration, and deployments
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership input in server platform strategy and technology development for incorporation into the overall GE Compute Engineering roadmap and strategic plan
  • Provide technical leadership and consultation to GE businesses and GIS internal teams
  • Use Project Management Methodology, and LEAN Six Sigma quality tools and rigor in developing business solutions
  • Abide by all GE Corporate and local policies and procedures including but not limited to Integrity, Diversity, Proprietary Information, Conflict of Interest, and EHS

    Qualifications/Requirements
    Basic Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems/Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of hands on experience working with Solaris / Linux / *NIX Virtualization in a large scale, multi-hundred or thousand server, environment
  • Minimum 5 years of hands on experience with SPARC platforms: Solaris 10, 9, 8
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in highly available, mission critical, enterprise environments
  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing and leading large scale, complex infrastructure initiatives in an enterprise environment

    Eligibility Requirements:

    Desired Characteristics

  • Minimum 3 years of hands on experience with x86 *NIX Operating Systems: 32 and 64-bit version of Red Hat / Oracle Enterprise Linux 4/5, other Linux variants
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with VMWare, Xen, KVM, or equivalent technologies in a large scale enterprise environment
  • Prior experience programming shell scripts in Bash, Perl or equivalent**
  • Prior experience with Oracle software products (database, RAC, eBusiness Suite, Siebel, etc.), Veritas Clustering, and Networked File Systems**
  • Prior hands on experience with networking, storage, patch management, monitoring and automation
  • Excellent track record of understanding and interest in current and emerging technologies demonstrated through training, job experience and/or industry activities
  • Ability to effectively perform cost benefit analysis, determine TCO, prepare and manage projects to budget
  • Ability to prepare statements of work, requests for proposal, and analyze responses from vendors
  • Independent worker with proven ability to simultaneously execute multiple projects in a demanding environment
  • Demonstrate experience working with software / hardware vendors and working with and managing outside resources to provide technology solutions
