ACCESS NURSE - PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY

Job Description The Access Nurse for Pediatric Neurology would be the initial point of contact for internal and external referring physicians as well as our patients and their families who are seeking clinical guidance. The Access Nurse would spend his/her time in our administrative suite triaging new patient referrals, answering clinical questions by phone, directing questions to physicians as needed, and supporting the clinical needs of patients. The Access Nurse will have clinical support available at all times. All non-urgent questions can be directed to the patient?s primary Neurologist, while urgent questions can ne answered by the Pediatric Neurologist on call?available either in person or by page. There will be a structured period of orientation to help learn the triage system, and how to manage the various types of clinical questions and support tasks that are required in this position. ? Triage urgent/semi urgent referrals from referring physicians. This may require contacting the patient directly for more information before the appointment can be scheduled. ? Assisting Patient Service Coordinators in triaging patients to subspecialty clinics. ? Answering medical questions by phone for current patients and families within the scope of practice as a registered nurse. ? Coordinating patient care between visits. This includes setting up labs, EEGs, filling out referral forms for sedation, neuropsychology testing etc. ? Providing imaging and other test results as appropriate by phone. ? Refilling medications. Requests are received through Patient Gateway, phone calls, a dedicated voicemail for prescriptions, and faxes from pharmacies. ? Creating and sending laboratory orders from physicians to outside labs as needed. ? Answering questions from mail order and local pharmacies on prescription clarification. ? Participating in quality and safety initiatives including daily Diastat checks and ensuring Joint Commission compliance ? Writing school/camp/daycare orders (for medication administration, guidelines for participation in physical activity, etc.). Provides educational materials as needed to schools, such as seizure management information. ? Writing medical support letters with the help of the primary Neurologist. ? Assisting with prior authorizations for insurance approval for testing or medications, providing clinical information to staff, as needed ? Creating and updating educational information for patients and families. Graduate of NLN approved School of Nursing Licensure as Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Bachelors Degree in Nursing preferred 2-3 years related experience; Experience in Neurology nursing preferred
