Aeronautical Engineer

Introduction:

The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Aeronautical Engineer.

 

Job Summary:

 

Predict and model the aerodynamic characteristics of missiles and other flight vehicles. Use both aerodynamic engineering codes and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to compute airframe performance. Participate in wind tunnel tests to capture critical aerodynamic characteristics and render data into high-fidelity aerodynamic models.

Duties:

 

Compute missile airframe aerodynamic characteristics using a variety of in-house and commercial tools.

Lead the development of aerodynamic models for various missile and flight vehicles using APL's aerodynamic modeling architecture.

Lead the planning and execution of wind tunnel tests for aerodynamic model development.

Lead independent research and development initiatives.

Document and publish results; attend symposiums and conferences to enhance the Laboratory's aerodynamic reputation and learn about new opportunities.

Required Qualifications:

 

BS in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering with training in aerodynamics, vehicle control and dynamics, incompressible/compressible flow and computational fluid dynamics. Five or more years experience in airframe aerodynamics analysis, wind tunnel testing and/or aerodynamic model development. Strong leadership in written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in several of the following: DATCOM, CFD++, Overflow, Cart3D, Gridgen, GridPro, FieldView, and Tecplot.

Desired Qualifications:

 

MS or PhD in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering. with concentration in CFD development and application. Experience and wind tunnel test plan development and execution.

Special Working Conditions:

Occasional travel to support wind tunnel testing at off-site test facilities and technical interchange meetings at contractor and sponsor locations.
