The Financial Markets Advisory Group ("FMA") is an advisory unit within BRS that works with clients on complex issues related to the intersection of the balance sheet and the capital markets.
- FMA's primary clients are banks, broker-dealers, market intermediaries, insurance companies, large institutional investors, central banks, finance ministries, regulatory agencies and nongovernmental/multi-lateral organizations.
- FMA's business combines the capital markets expertise of an investment bank, the portfolio
management capabilities of a global asset manager, the big data analytical and processing
capabilities of a technology company and the creative problem-solving of a financial institutions
consultancy.
FMA's primary activities are in three types of assignments:
- Valuation and risk assessment of balance sheet exposures, including securities, loans,
derivatives, income and equity capital; - Strategic advisory engagements, focused on balance sheet strategy, stress testing and capital planning; MA/restructuring transaction support; default and counterparty risk management andasset-liability management and hedge advisory; and
- Specialized asset management and transaction execution services, including near-,
intermediate- and long-term wind-downs and dispositions; asset workouts and restructuring;
enforcement and commutation and unwind and termination of synthetic exposures.
BlackRock's FMA team has advised on over $8 trillion in assets, and has completed over 300 advisory assignments in 25 countries. The firm's FMA business has also been a frequent adviser and service provider to credit institution regulators, including the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the U.S. Treasury, the National Credit Union Administration and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Some of our notable assignments include:
- Being selected by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to advise on and manage
approximately $100 BN of special purposes facilities related to the resolutions and extraordinary support measures for Bear Stearns Companies and American International Group (AIG); - Advising one of the world's largest banks on the disposition of a business unit, and liaising with prominent private equity firms involved in the MA process;
- Advising a European central bank and regulator with respect to domestic banks' exposure to loans in Emerging Markets;
- Performing diagnostic exercises on the Irish and Greek banking sectors, with results feeding into critical decisions for the banks, the sovereigns, and the investment community;
- Simulating the default of a family of clearing members to conduct a "firedrill" of resolution
capabilities for one of the world's largest central clearing counterparties; - Advising on market risk measurement and management, including hedging transactions, for a large portfolio of interest rate swaps owned by a non-bank systemically important financial
institution (SIFI); and - Working with over 20 U.S. banking institutions on important stress testing and capital planning initiatives as part of the implementation of the Dodd-Frank Act and the Federal Reserve's Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) exercises.
Role Description
FMA personnel work closely with clients in a team environment to develop and implement solutions that address their business needs. Our substantial client base includes some of the largest and most sophisticated financial institutions around the globe, providing our employees with dynamic, diverse and challenging work experiences.
The team is seeking an Analyst-level professional to support execution of client advisory engagements and business development activities involving banks, financial institutions, specialty financials, market intermediaries and official institutions (e.g., central banks, finance ministries, regulators). The client advisory Analyst would be primarily responsible for:
- Conduct research on a broad range of market, regulatory, client and product matters;
- Supporting lead engagement managers for client mandates, collaborating across functional areas of client and product specialists;
- Liaising among internal areas including analytics, modeling, and portfolio management;
- Supporting preparation of presentations for business development, communicating project
results, and providing updates on portfolio performance; - Assisting with quantitative analysis in support of client engagements;
- Advising clients on complex capital markets and balance sheet issues;
- Interfacing with clients to present results and address requests and questions; and
- Write both internally- and externally-oriented communications (briefing memos, presentations, thought pieces, white papers);
Specific Expectations of the Analyst:
Analysts are directly involved in the execution and delivery of many high profile client projects. Your role is therefore visible to both senior FMA staff and key clients, and requires excellent communication, planning, execution and time management skills. Our team consists of seasoned professionals from leading investment banks, consultancies, law firms, and from other parts of BlackRock. We have an exceptionally talented team and are looking for analysts who possess a number of attributes that are critical to success in our day-to-day work.
- Demonstrated record of academic achievement and leadership;
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities;
- Keen interest in financial markets and institutions;
- Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal) and an ability to synthesize complex ideas;
- Strong quantitative skills, including familiarity with Excel;
- Superior organizational skills, self-starter and ability to perform under pressure and tight
deadlines; - Relevant work experience is an additional benefit; and
- Critical to be team player with collaborative and partnerly orientation, strong interpersonal skills.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 1-2 years financial services or regulatory experience
- Minimum of a BA/BS or equivalent
- References and prior relevant experience preferred
