Analyst- Corporate Technical Accounting

Title: Analyst- Corporate Technical Accounting Location: New York-New York Other Locations: Analyst position within the Corporate Technical Advisory Group, focused on the management of the Company's Accounting Issues Log, Global MFR, Out of Period and Significant Accounting Matters processes. This position will be a member of the Corporate Technical Advisory Group with the following areas of responsibility: · Maintain the accounting issues log ("AIL") and memorandum for record ("MFR") log, including obtaining updates to the logs, organizing and facilitating the regular AIL and MFR calls, and creating logs for communication to the CFO and Corporate Comptroller. · Maintain the MFR database, ensuring that it is kept up to date with final copies of MFRs each quarter and ensuring all MFRs comply with the MFR protocol. · Act as first point of contact for quarterly audits of the AIL/MFR process, providing information as requested and answering questions on the process. · Prepare the quarterly Out of Period ("OP") analysis based on OP submissions from Controllers. The process involves: o Identifying potential OPs from MFRs o Assessing materiality of OPs on Company financial statements o Preparing multiple analytics on OP trends and financial statement impacts o Preparing ad-hoc analysis on OP information, including by root cause, financial statement line item, segment, and others as requested o Drafting the quarterly materiality memo · Preparing the Significant Items and Out of Period information for the PwC closing meeting and the Corporate Comptroller Board Book on a quarterly basis · Preparing the Materiality Log in advance of the quarterly Materiality Meetings with the Corporate Comptroller · Ad-hoc technical accounting / other projects · Engage with Technologies and an MFR database team to provide an automated solution that meets the requirements of the process. · Must have good organization skills and be proactive · Must have very strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely translate complex accounting jargon into plain English. · Must have a demonstrated and proven ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced deadline-driven and constantly changing environment. · Must be able to work as part of a team in a consultative environment, constantly working with various groups within AXP, as well as work independently on individual projects. · Strong MS Excel skills · Pragmatic commercial operator with strong technical disciplines. · Confident leader with outstanding relationship management skills. · Ability to drive change across a large operation utilizing strong influencing skills and an ability to convey a sense of purpose, alignment with company strategy, and connection to individual's goals. · Excellent leader and collaborative team player with ability to build relationships and influence decisions and get things done with or without direct authority. · Bachelor's degree required. · CPA a plus, with a minimum of 1-3 years of experience. · Accounting Reporting: technical knowledge associated with current accounting pronouncements, familiarity with financial statements by segment, understanding of business drivers and implications. · In-depth knowledge of multiple finance processes in large business operations. · Successful track record in delivering significant change at a senior level and ability to communicate this effectively to all levels of the organization. · Experience of project managing major process reengineering activity across a large finance function. The Technical Advisory Group provides support to the Business, Finance and Controllership through formal and informal consultation. The goals and responsibilities of this group include: . Ensure accuracy of AmEx financial reporting and compliance with GAAP and AmEx policy . Mitigate risk of errors in the financial statements . Ensure consistent accounting within AmEx . Mitigate risk of unforeseen accounting consequences . Policy review and interpretation . Technical accounting training . IFRS financial statement reviews . Emerging GAAP and its implementation
