Role Summary

We are presently recruiting for an Analyst in the Public Market Investments department. Based in Toronto and reporting to the Senior Portfolio Manager, the Analyst plays a key role in making and managing hedge fund investments globally. The Analyst will assist in evaluating potential fund managers, conducting research, developing investment recommendations, participating in the negotiation and execution of fund investments and managing investments.

Role-Specific Accountabilities

A) Analyze Investment Opportunities

• Research, analyze and evaluate hedge fund managers, including assisting in the overall evaluation process

• Perform due diligence on hedge funds managers (including investment performance, quality of investment teams, investment merits and risks, expected returns, etc.)

• Perform quantitative analysis on the impact of a given hedge fund investment on the CPPIB portfolio

• Develop independent, fact-based views on external managers

• Assist team in preparation of investment recommendation materials, including ad hoc analyses in addition to written investment recommendations

• Assist in presenting Manager Recommendations to the External Portfolio Management Team, Public Market Investments department and the Investment Committee

• Attend and participate in External Portfolio Management investment recommendation meetings

B) Manage and Monitor Hedge Fund Investments

• Coordinate with CPPIB Finance Operations, Risk Management and Total Portfolio Management teams with respect to monitoring ongoing investments

• Monitor ongoing financial performance of funds, providing an ongoing assessment of performance, and risk exposures

• Participate in regular meetings and calls with hedge fund managers as required

C) Assist in Developing External Portfolio Management Strategy

• Assist (Sr.) Portfolio Managers in evaluating the attractiveness of addressing new hedge fund strategies

• Perform market research on various hedge fund strategies

• Perform quantitative analysis to understand the impact and/or complementary nature of various strategies with the CPPIB portfolio

If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:

• 2 - 4 years experience in investing / portfolio management, investment banking, equity/fixed income research, private equity, management consulting or other relevant areas

• Undergraduate or post-graduate degree, preferably in commerce or business administration, engineering or mathematics

• Strong understanding of business models and capital structures required

• Sound knowledge of finance, economics, statistics and trading strategies is required

• A demonstrated interest in portfolio management, trading, investing and/or finance

• Candidate needs to be resourceful and able to manage multiple priorities

• Strong research, financial modeling, analytical and valuation skills 

• Professionalism and integrity

• Strong interpersonal skills

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

• Flexibility, adaptability and initiative

• Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure
