Role Summary
We are currently recruiting for a full-time Analyst or Senior Analyst to join the Relationship Investments group within the Public Market Investments Department in Toronto. The Relationship Investments group provides strategic capital in the range of $100 million to more than $1 billion to public companies to help finance acquisitions, fund organic growth, facilitate shareholder transitions or recapitalize balance sheets. Reporting to the Vice President – Head of Relationship Investments, the Analyst / Senior Analyst will work on deal teams to evaluate potential relationship investment opportunities, conduct due diligence and other forms of research, develop investment recommendations, and evaluate potential deal structures via multi-faceted financial models. The Analyst / Senior Analyst will also be responsible for ongoing analysis related to portfolio companies and monitoring investments, and is expected to establish mutually constructive relationships with the other investment groups within the CPP Investment Board. Typically, Senior Analysts are expected to fulfill their responsibilities with greater independence levels than Analysts, and they possess greater levels of prior work experience.
Role Specific Accountabilities:
Analyze Investment Opportunities
- Research, analyze, and evaluate investment opportunities and conduct screens for potential investee companies globally
- Build complex financial models to analyze investment opportunities and test assumptions and sensitivities
- Perform due diligence on potential investee companies, including past and projected financial performance, quality of management teams, investment merits and risks, expected returns, regulatory environment, industry dynamics and other relevant factors
- Review third party due diligence reports (legal, accounting, industry strategic reviews, environmental, etc.)
- Perform valuation analysis, including DCF models, precedent transactions, comparable company analysis, and relative value compared with the benchmark
- Meet with company management to review past performance, strategy, outlook, regulatory and industry issues, and other applicable topics
- Assist in drafting and presenting investment recommendations, taking into account due diligence and analysis of opportunities
Execute Relationship Investments
- Liaise and build relationships with potential intermediaries
- Maintain relationships with advisers and third party board representatives
- Monitor Investments
- Coordinate with CPPIB Investment Finance and Operations teams with respect to monitoring investments
- Analyze ongoing financial performance of investee companies and industry peers
- Prepare weekly asset management reports that reflect an investee company’s status and salient industry developments
- Assist in evaluating potential exit strategies and updating valuation models
- Build the team
- Represent the CPP Investment Board externally and be an active communicator of the organization’s strategies and objectives
- Review, analyze, and comment on investment recommendations prepared by other members of the team
- Assist in campus recruitment initiatives and networking events
- Attend and participate in weekly group meetings
If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:
• The ideal candidate will possess 1-2 years (Analyst) or 2-3 years (Senior Analyst) of experience working for an investment bank, management consulting, investment management, public accounting or private equity firm
• Undergraduate degree in Commerce, Economics, Statistics, Finance, Business Administration or related field
• Achieved high levels of academic performance and exhibit intellectual curiosity
• Strong research, analytical, financial modeling, valuation, problem solving skills and ability to think creatively
• Demonstrate strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
• Solid verbal and written communication skills
• Exhibit strong attention to detail and accuracy while meeting deadlines and working under pressure
• Candidates must be comfortable with changing priorities and new challenges in their role
• Willingness to travel
• Knowledge of additional languages is an asset
