Analyst, Principal Investing recruitment

Role Summary

Located in our Toronto office and reporting to the Vice President – Head of Principal Investing, the Analyst plays a key role in making and managing private equity investments around the world.  The Analyst assists Associates, Principals and Senior Principals in evaluating potential private equity principal investment opportunities, conducting research, developing investment recommendations, participating in the execution of investments and monitoring and managing investments.

Role Specific Accountabilities

A)      Analyze Investment Opportunities:

i) Review:

•         Research, analyze and evaluate a variety of industries, companies and securities, including assisting in the overall evaluation process

•         Build complex dynamic financial models to analyze investment opportunities (including testing

assumptions and sensitivities)

•         Perform due diligence on companies including past and projected investment performance, quality of

management teams, investment merits and risks, expected returns, regulatory environment and industry dynamics

•         Review 3rd party due diligence reports (legal, accounting, industry strategic reviews, environmental, etc.)

•         Perform valuation analysis of companies and securities, including DCF, precedent transactions and comparable company analysis

•         Meet with company management and review past performance, strategy, outlook, industry issues, and other relevant topics as required

ii) Recommend:

•         Attend and participate in Principal Investing investment recommendation meetings

•         Assist in presenting investment recommendations to the Private Investments department and the Investment Department Decision Committee

B)       Execute Principal Investments:

•         Assist with the overall execution of Principal investments

•         Liaise with investment partners and advisors (financial, legal, etc.)

C)       Monitor Principal Investments:

•         Monitor ongoing financial performance of portfolio companies

•         Assist in performing valuation reviews for portfolio companies

•         Assist in building and leveraging relationships with portfolio company management teams and private equity sponsors

•         Assist in monitoring potential exit alternatives (including public market conditions, potential strategic partners

D)      Build the Team:

•         Participate in and contribute to weekly departmental meetings

•         Assist in recruiting activities including liaising with universities, networking, sourcing candidates and interviewing prospective hires, as required

•         Attend and participate in Private Investments recommendation meetings

•         Other relevant duties and projects as assigned

If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:

•         1 - 3 years experience in investment banking, private equity or other relevant areas

•         Undergraduate degree, preferably in commerce or business administration

•         CFA, CBV or CA designation is considered an asset

•         Strong research, financial modeling, analytical and valuation skills 

•         Professionalism and integrity

•         Strong interpersonal skills and business relationship skills

•         Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

•         Flexibility, adaptability and initiative

•         Good judgment

•         Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure

•         Team player who enjoys a high performance culture

•         Willingness to travel
