Role Summary

We are presently recruiting for an Analyst, Private Debt in the Private Investments department in our UK office.  Reporting to the Vice President—Head of Private Debt, the Analyst plays a key role in making and managing private equity investments around the world.  The Analyst assists Associates, Principals and Senior Principals in evaluating potential private equity principal investment opportunities, conducting research, developing investment recommendations, participating in the execution of investments and monitoring and managing investments.

Role-Specific Accountabilities

Analyze Investment Opportunities

• Research, analyze and evaluate a variety of industries, companies and securities and assist in the overall evaluation process; conduct credit analysis of companies including load-to-value analysis, preparation of relevant credit metrics including precedent transactions and comparable company analysis

• Build complex dynamic financial models to analyze investment opportunities; test assumptions and sensitivities

• Perform due diligence on companies including past and projected investment performance, quality of management teams, investment merits and risks, expected returns, regulatory environment and industry dynamics; review 3rd party due diligence reports (legal, accounting, industry strategic reviews, environmental, etc.)

• Perform valuation analysis of companies and securities, including DCF, precedent transactions and comparable company analysis; assist in performing valuation reviews for portfolio companies

• Meet with company management and review past performance, strategy, outlook, industry issues, and other relevant topics as required

• Attend and participate in Principal Investing investment recommendation meetings; assist in presenting investment recommendations to the department and the Investment Department Decision Committee

Execute Private Debt Investments

• Assist with the overall execution of Principal Investments

• Liaise with investment partners and advisors

Monitor Private Debt Investments

• Coordinate with CPPIB Finance Operations group with respect to monitoring ongoing debt investments

• Monitor ongoing financial performance of portfolio companies

• Assist in building and leveraging relationships with private equity sponsors, investment and commercial banks and other capital providers.

• Assist in evaluating credit migration strategies for underlying credit investments as required

Build the Team

• Share information by coordinating and entering information into TNR for both existing and prospective investments

• Assist in recruiting activities; attend and participate in Private Investments recommendation meetings

If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:

• 1-3 years experience in leveraged finance, credit investing, investment banking, or other relevant areas within the European market

• Undergraduate degree, preferably in commerce or business administration; CFA, CBV or CA designation is considered an asset; German and/or French language an asset

• Strong research, financial modeling, analytical and valuation skills 

• Strong interpersonal skills and business relationship skills

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

• Flexibility, adaptability, initiative and sound judgement

• Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure

• Team player who enjoys a high performance culture

• Demonstration of our guiding principles of integrity, partnership and high performance

• Willingness to travel.
