Analyst, Shale Gas Market Research and Sales Support

Primary Role

Supports the American Water Shale Gas Development Team in pursuit of new business opportunities in the shale gas market, with a primary focus on the Pennsylvania and West Virginia markets; provides research and analysis of sales and partnership targets using effective online tools and other internal/external resources; develops and cultivates relationships with stakeholders in the shale gas industry; identifies promising shale gas-related opportunities; promotes –  in coordination with the rest of the Shale Gas Development Team and Corporate Communications –  American Water’s service offerings in the shale gas space, including water supply and treatment services, integrated water resource master planning and consulting, water quality analysis and consulting, and related services; assists in development and execution of strategic plans for driving profitable and sustainable business growth in line with the company’s business plan targets and strategy.

Key Accountabilities

·    Conducts research and analysis on specific sales targets and partnership opportunities (e.g., using local media sources and trade press, industry events, analysis of municipal political events, competitive activity, financial information, and other in-house sources like Government Affairs) and develops a template to capture the data;  

·    Helps build the business development pipeline for new services related to the shale gas industry to maintain a steady flow of business opportunities;

·    Identifies, qualifies and prioritizes leads through the use of appropriate tools, local market data and active targeted prospecting;

·    Develops, shapes and tracks potential opportunities and match services and products offerings with customer needs;

·    Develops network of contacts to identify potential candidates for sales and partnership opportunities;

·    Recommends potential service offerings to deliver commercially viable solutions to meet customer needs;

·    Prepares proposals and presentations;

·    Prepares analysis and communicates findings both in writing and orally to the rest of the Shale Gas Development Team, Vice President of Mid-Atlantic Division, state presidents and their management teams and other company executives (this includes offering a research-based perspective and recommendations on the target’s viability and attractiveness to American Water);

·    Assists in creation of customized communications and presentations;

·    Assists with financial analysis and operational viability studies of targeted opportunities with appropriate departments;

·    Creates market awareness and interest in American Water’s Shale Gas Development Team;

·    Develops and maintains American Water brand image with the key industry stakeholders, interfaces directly or indirectly with current and potential customers, attends stakeholder and public meetings as required;

·    Organizes and attends industry conferences to share existing information and learn about new industry developments;

·    Other duties as assigned

Education

Bachelor’s-level degree in market research, economics, business or other relevant field

Knowledge

·    Comprehensive and diverse understanding of customer intelligence gathering methods

·    Financial and commercial acumen

·    Business development related experience and knowledge of the water industry (shale gas industry knowledge also a plus)
