- The Future Fund was established in April 2006 by the Australian Government to make provision for the Commonwealth’s unfunded superannuation liabilities. These liabilities will become payable during a period when an aging population is likely to place significant pressure on the Australian Government’s finances.
- The Future Fund has received contributions from the Government’s budget surpluses and the allocation of Telstra T3 proceeds and shares. The balance of the Future Fund was $85.2 billion at 31 March 2013. In investing the contributions, the Fund is targeting a return of at least 4.5% over the Consumer Price Index over the long term with an acceptable but not excessive level of risk.
- The Future Fund’s Board and management are also responsible for the investment of the Education Investment Fund, the Building Australia Fund and the Health and Hospitals Fund which had combined funds of $12.3 billion as at 31 March 2013. In May 2013, it was announced that the Disability Care Australia Fund will also be managed by the Future Fund Board of Guardians.
- The Future Fund takes an internal build/external buy approach with the majority of investment and support needs being met by high quality outsourced providers who are closely aligned with the culture and objectives of the Future Fund. Equally, the Future Fund focuses on developing world class skills internally in its efforts to build investment strategies.

Role overview
The primary role of the Analyst is to provide analytical and operational support to the Head of Strategy in the delivery of portfolio analysis and advice.
The position will commence as a generalist role supporting the senior strategists and will provide the opportunity to specialise in one of the following three key Strategy practice areas:
- Portfolio design: including portfolio and asset class modelling, as well as portfolio risk analysis.
- Economics and Capital Markets: including monitoring global markets, macroeconomic, and policy developments, providing macro-economic research and forecasts and the creation of economic scenario and thematic analytics.
- Strategic Risk Management: implementation of various linear (swaps, forwards, and futures) and non-linear or asymmetric (option) overlays.
You will need to have the following skills and attributes
- A degree qualification. This may include a degree in finance or economics, but highly numerate candidates from other backgrounds (including sciences and the arts) with a keen interest in portfolio management, will also be considered;
- Likely 1-3 years relevant experience and a background in investment analysis and management, or from a related industry such as investment banking, accounting, economics or academia;
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Basic VBA programming knowledge, experience with Matlab and proficiency with financial data sources such as Bloomberg a plus;
- A high level of numeracy and literacy including preparing both verbal and written presentations;
- A demonstrated ability to carry out research projects that have the potential to lead to portfolio change;
- A willingness to be a generalist and desire to broaden skill-sets and experience is paramount;
- A self-aware, confident nature, able to make well reasoned and structured arguments in the absence of perfect information; and
- At ease in a dynamic team-based environment where collaboration and robust discussion is encouraged.
