Apheresis Technician- Phlebotomy

General Summary Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing, performs donor evaluations, prepares donor and equipment for the apheresis procedure, and operates the blood cell separator while monitoring the donor throughout the Apheresis collection procedure. Receives orders for apheresis products and performs donor search and recruitment activities as necessary to fill orders. Red Cross Blood Service regions operate under the jurisdiction of the U.S. License 190, and are thereby subject to applicable regulations of the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as other regulations (OSHA, CLIA). In addition, there are detailed operating procedures and standard communications by NHQ. Compliance with directives and regulations requires that blood regions follow Red Cross Directives (BSDrsquo;s), document all aspects of daily operations, and ensure that staff are adequately trained. Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities 1. Reviews medical history information reported by donor on registration form and interviews donor to verify health criteria required. 2. Performs routine tests on a sample of blood to evaluate donor suitability for the apheresis procedures. Obtains a blood sample for testing by laboratory personnel. 3. Sets up, prepares, and tests the blood cells separator and prepares donor for the procedure, performing venipunctures. 4. Monitors the well being of the donor by observation throughout the procedure, seeking medical assistance if needed. 5. Prepares apheresis units for laboratory processing. 6. Receives hospital orders for apheresis products and searches donor records for the appropriate HLA match for the patient; calls potential donors to request donations and schedules appointments. 7. Maintains records and prepares reports as required; includes maintaining donor records, quality control reports, donor schedules, and preparing periodic production reports. 8. Complies with all applicable compliance and safety directives and regulations. 9. Maintains confidentiality with regard to all medical and other private donor, client, and business information. Employment Qualifications Education: Completion of two years of college in nursing or a health science. Experience: Skills acquired in operation of complex, computer-assisted, mechanical equipment. Other Requirements: Current qualification in CPR and up to date in other emergency procedures.
