Symetra is seeking an experienced Applications Developer. Qualified candidates will be responsible for the development, coding, debugging, testing and documentation of mainframe annuities administration systems (Vantage-One and wmA), applicable middleware and interfaces for new and existing applications. This person will be an integral member of a cross functional team charged with upgrading the legacy system environment to support product development and business process optimization.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge of technical design alternatives and the implementation implications
- Demonstrates knowledge of the technology supporting application(s) for a line of business.
- Assists in managing complete life cycle for most complex or high-risk components
- Develops and implements maintenance plans to address technical and business issues; performing maintenance and urgent problem resolution on software applications
- Assists in the analysis of functional design/overall application technical design and develops detailed module technical application for moderate to complex components
- Demonstrates knowledge of application development environments, tools and methodologies across multiple platforms and may suggest improvements
- Performs complex and urgent maintenance and problem resolution on software applications involving multiple applications, platforms and interfaces
- Identifies opportunities for improving application functionality and performance issues by working with customers and architecture resources
- Provides rotating 24x7 on-call support.

Qualifications:
- Experience working with financial investment products (annuities, mutual funds) within the Financial Services industry preferred
- Application configuration experience with large/complex vendor based administration systems preferred
- Application integration w/ infrastructure dependencies preferred
- 3-5 years programming and system design experience in financial services or a related industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Mid-level knowledge of appropriate operating systems, programming languages, and development tools (COBOL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, TSO, JCL)
- Experience with DB2 Database Administration a plus
- Experience with JAVA a plus
- Experience in structured programming technology for structured language environment a plus
- Bachelor's degree from a four year college or university in Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience
- Ability to assess requirements, alternatives, and risks/benefits
- Ability to operate effectively both independently and in a team environment
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem solving skills
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
