Rio Tinto Technology and Innovation (TI) provides a range of support and services functions to individual Rio Tinto business units. Its Project Development and Implementation (PDI) group both supports and directly manages a range of major projects; integral to this work is the Project Management Office, which has been formed to develop systems, tools and project management capability, as well as further the vision of a template for repeated success in major capital projects.
 
The US$2bn Argyle Underground Project was approved in December 2006.  It comprises the development and construction of a block cave mine which, when completed, will extend the life of the Argyle Diamond mine from 2012 through to 2018.
 
Reporting to the Superintendent Geotechnical, on a back to back roster you will be responsible for your team consisting of an Engineer, Graduate and 2 Technicians.  Your primary focus is to support the Technical Services Team in all facets relating to the Geotechnical discipline, in particular ground support, seismic monitoring, modelling of stress, monitoring of excavation performance and implementation of quality management systems.

Key accountabilities include:
 

  • Maintain, update and implement the Ground Control Management Plan
  • Maintain, update and implement the Block Cave Management Plan
  • Design and implementation of geotechnical instrumentation for excavation monitoring
  • Undertake and implement continuous improvement projects and studies
  • Develop and coordinate the reporting of key performance indicators to monitor progress
  • Prepare cost and performance budgets
  • Mentor and assist Geotechnical Engineers and Mine Technicians - Geotech

 
You will hold a relevant engineering degree with a minimum of 6 years experience in an Underground Geotechnical role.  Exposure to Geotechnical software such as Unwedge, Phases, Flac3D, Map3d and Vulcan would be advantageous.  The ability to effectively lead and manage a team of professionals will see you succeed in this role.
