The Group: Morningstar’s Research group provides independent analysis on individual securities, funds, markets, and portfolios. The Research group also provides data on hundreds of thousands of investment offerings, including stocks, mutual funds, and similar vehicles, along with real-time global market data on millions of equities, indexes, futures, options, commodities, and precious metals, in addition to foreign exchange and Treasury markets. Morningstar is one of the largest independent sources of fund, equity, and credit data and research in the world, and our advocacy for investors’ interests is the foundation of our company.

With global equity coverage of 1,800 companies and credit research on more than 700 firms, the group evaluates companies using a consistent methodology that identifies a company’s’ sustainable competitive advantage and risks. For valuation, the group primarily use discounted cash flow models to develop intrinsic value estimates on each coverage firm, but also consider alternative valuation methods as appropriate.

The Role: Our equities research group requires an experienced equity analyst to cover Asia-Pacific financials stocks, such asinsurers, asset managers, banks, and other diversified financial firms. Performing fundamental analysis within our well defined research framework, the role holder will write research reports and determine fair values on a select group of stocks. They will also be accountable for pitching investment ideas internally and externally in accordance with Morningstar’s investment methodology. This role is based in our Sydney office.

Key Responsibilities:

+ Research, analyse and determine equity fair values on 15-20 companies within the Australian financials sector

+ Build valuation models on coverage companies, focusing on key business drivers and scenario analysis

+ Regularly publish reports and in-depth research pieces on coverage companies and industries

+ Develop relationships with coverage companies and industry participants to enhance research and build brand

+ Show a constant interest in pushing Morningstar’s research methodology and business forward

+ Proactively surface attractive investment ideas internally and externally to support all products and clients

+ Meet with sophisticated institutional clients to discuss research and Morningstar methodology

+ Coordinate with global sector teams regarding content, methodology, etc.

+ Act with independence and an investor’s first attitude at all times

Requirements:

+Posses independence, critical thinking skills, and a passion for investing

+ Communicate-well both written and orally with public company executives and institutional investors

+ Have a bias toward long-term fundamental research and investing

+ Work well within a team and be capable of respectfully accepting and providing constructive feedback

+ Be self-motivated but capable of working within a well-defined framework

+ Make timely decisions under demanding deadlines, sometimes with incomplete information

+ Sound financial modeling skills together with knowledge of business valuation techniques

+ Fluent English language capabilities

+ Minimum of bachelor’s degree in a finance, accounting, mathematics or IT-related subject required

+ Graduate degree  together with CFA designation preferred

+ At least five years experience gained in an analyst position including at least two years reviewing public companies in the Asia-Pacific financials sector
