Asia Refinery Analyst

Position Purpose
Cargill Energy Transportation and Metals ( ETM) Analytics acts as the focus for fundamental analysis for Cargill Thermal Energy Supply Chain, Ocean Transportation (OT), Transport Fuels (TF), Petrochemicals (PC) and Metals businesses. Cargill Transport Fuels and Petrochemical Business Units have jointly determined the need for analysts who are responsible for building and maintaining economic models to support trading decisions and to help identify trading opportunities for the businesses. This Asia refinery analysis position will be based in Singapore, will work in tandem with our lead refinery analyst in Houston and reports functionally to Management of ETM Analytics in coordination with global trading desk heads of TF/PC to determine focus points and priorities. In this role you will provide analytical support to the both the TF and PC global trading teams and work in close coordination with other analysts supporting those trading teams.

 

Principal Accountabilities

MARGINS 30%

• Calculate the Asian margins on a daily basis, focus on incremental barrel
• Strong focus on China with deep dives into linking margins with refinery yields
• Ensure we are tracking best prices and curves for margin and yield work
 

REFINERY WORK 55%

• Monitor fundamental factors affecting Asian refineries such as margins, capacity changes, effect of new technology, maintenance/problems, product specifications, etc
• Work with the US lead refinery analyst on maintaining a clear consistent global view on the global refinery capacities, shutdowns, margin cuts, and crude and feedstocks run rates  • Understand how the refinery runs and yields will ultimately change production and affect the individual crude and product SDs
• Help determine the flags for refinery and production changes and sensitivity to variables
• Develop the refinery simulation model for Asia and integrate with the US and rest of the world models
• Use LP technology to model refinery behavior
• Help quantify refinery implications to problems/events/value/assay changes
• Work with analysts and trading team to estimate product yields

 

COMMUNICATION 15%

• Provide clear and timely delivery of focused information
• Give clear guidance to the traders and analysts on ongoing changes
• Coordination with analysts/traders to ensure a consistent refinery view used in all models

 

Education
• Degree in a quantitative subject or refinery economics/chemistry

 

Experience
• At least 3 years experience in a refinery in position(s) linked to understanding refinery economics, supply planning, production
• Exposure with various sectors in refining in which a good understanding of main crude assays, product specifications, constraints in refining and most common/practical solutions refiners use was developed
• Some experience of refinery linear programming systems, refinery optimization, optimal refinery crude use/purchasing and refinery production modeling
• Exposure to working closely with trading team
• Demonstrated internal/external networking capability and demonstrated team player

 

Skills

• Good knowledge of systems such as excel, VBA, Matlab and database tools
