Purpose of position:  The Assistant Art Director manages and develops concepts, visual brand identity, and design and production aspects for a wide variety of print and electronic projects in a deadline-driven publishing environment supporting strategic and integrated University-wide marketing initiatives.

 

Essential functions:  Supports key marketing and communications strategies and creates integrated design systems from concept through completed product. Art direction and design development of all assigned communications materials across multiple media platforms. Develops original concepts and project specifications, coordinates and creates original photography and illustration assignments, creates high-level presentations for design and client review. Develops concepts, designs, and produces brand identities, publications, magazines, advertisements, environmental graphics, and supports and coordinates related online communications within the framework of a state-of-the-art electronic publishing network. Exhibits high level of proficiency in evolving design trends, page layout, graphics development, web development, type specification, pre-press, proofing, and printing methods. Hands-on involvement in all aspects of production. Create and develop original web site concepts as well as create and develop sites from affiliated publications, marketing materials, and departmental resources to extend the brand of University collateral into online environments. Works closely with the department's Online Communications team. Helps coordinate and direct photo shoots and illustration as necessary. Hires and supervises the work of freelance photographers and illustrators. Works closely with University photographers and Multimedia team. Adheres to and monitors deadlines, procedures, and budgets at all stages of project development. Works collegially on a broad-based team of communications and design professionals and reports progress and status of projects at expected times to multiple staff members. Maintains detailed and accurate project records. Helps maintain departmental photographic and electronic file libraries and archives in accordance with design studio guidelines. Works directly with senior administrators, faculty, and staff, as necessary, in order to ensure accuracy, relevance, and appropriateness of design concepts and materials. Secures approvals and maintains documentation, as necessary. Stays abreast of current design trends and developments in electronic publishing and technology. Works closely with Art Director to develop appropriate hardware and software solutions, and helps other staff stay current on emerging technology and techniques.  Other functions as assigned.

 

Licenses:  Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

 

Required qualifications:  Bachelor's degree in graphic design, communications, or related field. 5 years of relevant experience (developing and designing graphic content for print or electronic communications) supported by strong portfolio. Proven experience in developing effective integrated communications and marketing materials in a high-energy, team-based creative environment. Demonstrated technical proficiency with current software for layout, illustration, graphics, photo manipulation, and file transfer systems. Must have full knowledge of multi-color printing, including pre-press, proofing, paper, and display materials. Ability to work independently, exercising good judgment and assuring high degree of quality and accuracy in all products. Strong communication skills and ability to effectively interact with faculty, administrators, vendors, and department staff members to achieve communications objectives. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

 

Preferred qualifications:  Experience and proficiency in web site design and related online technologies is strongly preferred. Working knowledge of developing original photography (assignment and art direction) and illustration (assignment and art direction). Experience working at a design firm, communications or marketing agency, or in-house creative department. Working conditions:  May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Use of manual dexterity.
