Responsibilities
Reporting directly to the Director of Communications, the Assistant Director of Communications will be responsible for assisting in developing, implementing, and evolving an integrated communications strategy including external and internal communications, public relations and media relations, and digital and social media strategy for the College to inform, engage, and retain various constituents (students, alumni, staff, and faculty); increase, brand awareness; and support and drive business goals. This individual should stay current on communications and social media trends and best practices, evaluate the latest contemporary tools and work with the Director of Communications to integrate and coordinate communications with other key functions of CPS including marketing, enrollment, admissions and other units, and develop best practices and measurement for all communications engagement. As a member of the communications team, this individual will act as a brand steward to work to ensure the College is represented consistently from a visual and messaging perspective through all College communications efforts. Additionally, the Assistant Director of Communications will work with colleagues across CPS including academic units, enrollment management, and alumni relations on various communications projects and advise on how to integrate communications best practices into their business efforts.
Position has four general areas of Responsibility:
1) Assist in Development of Communications Plans for the College: Assist the Director of Communications in developing an integrated annual communications plan including, public relations, and digital and social media for the College. This involves devising a communications strategy for the year for all audiences (students, alumni, staff, faculty and other stakeholders) based on the goals of the College, Identify key messages and the best methods for reaching target audiences to devise plans and a communications calendar.
2) Implement and Execute Communications Plans: Responsible for implementing and executing significant portions of the College communications plan in a matrixed team work environment. Individual will be responsible for key aspects of the planning process including developing timelines, budgeting, writing and editing, and managing external vendors.
3) Public Relations and Media Relations: Working with the Director of Communications, develop a comprehensive public relations and media relations component of the Colleges annual communications plan. Responsibilities include sourcing stories internally for external communications, writing press releases and pitch letters, developing relationships with key editors and reporters, scheduling and managing press interviews leading to positive press coverage of the College, its programs, faculty, students and events.
4) Communications Tools and Best Practices -- Responsible for evaluating emerging communications technologies and best practices and recommending and implementing various contemporary tools for the College and its various audiences.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree with at least 5 years experience in communications. Experience in higher education is preferred, but not mandatory. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in developing and implementing communications strategies and possess excellent writing and editorial skill. Strong media relations, organizational, project management and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment with multiple internal clients. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, basic HTML, and content management systems.
