Description:
The Assistive Technology Specialist (ATS) is responsible for providing patients with assessment, consultative support and services in the use of assistive technology. The ATS collaborates with therapists, nurses and medical staff to assess assistive technology needs, hardware, software and special equipment for functional use. The ATS provides on-site training and training materials for patients to ensure efficient and maximum use of the prescribed assistive technology. The ATS specialist collaborates with internal and external vendors to insure the proper assistive technology is procured and delivered to the patient and that proper billing procedures are followed.
Direct Patient Care Responsibilities
- Demonstrates proficiency in the care of all ages: pediatrics, adolescents, and adults.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the care of neonates as required by assignment.
- Apply knowledge of, and ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to Assistive Technology, Accessibility and Universal Design concepts to develop conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
- Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and legal requirements (such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508) applicable to working with and accommodating students with disabilities.
- Evaluates and analyze the assistive technology needs of patient's including seating and positioning, mobility, adaptive equipment, home accessibility, etc. Screen and identify the level of technology and environmental interventions needed, ranging from none to basic to advanced/complex.
- Independently provides and coordinates age appropriate consultation in typical and specialty patient care situations.
- Design, alter, and/or adapt assistive technology according to principles within basic technology and environment application, including consideration of mechanics/strength of materials, mechanical components, systems, and electrical circuits and components.
- Provide consultation, access to, delivery of, and training in basic technology to other services, families, and outside agencies to recommend equipment, home or school modifications, transition of care, etc.
- Assists in coordinating outside agencies to recommend and procure assistive technology, durable medical equipment, home/school modifications and prior to discharge from therapy/hospital.
- Knowledge and ability to provide information regarding the purchase and use of assistive technology, software and hardware to patients, families and personnel throughout the organization.
- Completes timely documentation as required by departmental policy #4.7, The Joint Commission, and CARF standards.
- Attends meetings related to patient treatment and contributes to discussion as an interdisciplinary team member.
- Maintains knowledge of insurance referral/authorization process and documentation requirements related to assistive technology and durable medical equipment.
- Provides inservice training programs and follows specific protocols/pathways for direct patient care issues as mandated by hospital specialty programs.
Indirect Patient Care Responsibilities
- Staff development: coordinates and provides inservices/staff mentoring on specific technical skills and interventions. Requisitions specialty materials and coordinates budget suggestions for program needs and assistive technology equipment. Completes peer review forms and suggests changes and revisions to the peer review system. Reviews discipline specific competencies annually to reflect current practice and treatment techniques.
- CQI: participates in program, discipline, specialty, and hospital-wide PI projects. Trains staff on CQI and records/reports on PI projects.
- Assessment and Treatment: Assesses and provides input to staff on new evaluation and treatment tools. Designs and reviews treatment and evaluation protocols and coordinates the design and implementation of critical and clinical pathways.
- Program Development: Develops strategic goals for specialty, discipline and/or program – in collaboration with director. Reviews/revises clinical tools. Assists in designing activities to increase program use, awareness and marketability. Attends program meetings.
- Clinical Education: Teaches classes in the hospital or community on specialty areas as needed. Provides clinical mentorship, training and guidance to Therapeutic and Rehabilitation staff as needed. Supervises and assists with students as needed by department. Coordinates educational request from internal/external programs.
- Teamwork: Coordinates and participates in program, discipline, intra-hospital and extra-hospital educational programming for typical and specialty populations with medical, nursing and other ancillary staff. Leads/coordinates multidisciplinary or program specialty teams.
- Professional Development: Cultivates ties and develops an active role within professional organizations. Attends advanced coursework for specialty development and presents inservice to staff. May prepare professional abstracts, design professional poster presentations, design teaching modules, serve on professional association committees and pursue professional specialty certification. Leads/attends Therapeutic and Rehabilitation
- Services meetings as scheduled in hospital. Participates and/or leads promotional activities for assistive technology and rehabilitation.
Requirements:
- 3+ years' experience required.
- Master's Degree required
- Post Graduate (6+ years of formal training/education beyond high school; e.g., Ph.D., M.D., J.D.)
- Must be eligible for FL license in area of practice (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy) or Bachelor in Biomedical Engineer.
- Assistive Technology Professional certification (ATP) required
- CPR certification (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) within 6 months of employment.
- Member of professional specialty organizations (RESNA, AOTA, APTA) preferred
