Associate Director, Finance Long Rande Planning
Working in collaboration with our Franchises, Research and Development, Commercial, and Strategy, the Associate Director of Long Range Planning will coordinate our analytical processes supporting RD portfolio management and long range planning at Vertex.
Responsibilities include:
- Coordinating our annual long range planning process and integrating it with our evergreen planning process
- Continuously improving processes and systems to support program investment options, RD costs, commercial forecasts, and estimates of portfolio value drivers under various scenarios
- Working with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure transparency, calibration, and documentation of asset valuation assumptions
- Staying abreast of latest developments in the field of portfolio management and asset valuation, and adapting / applying relevant techniques to ensure optimal management of our analytical capabilities
- Coordinating comprehensive portfolio reviews as well as ongoing portfolio trade-off and investment analyses
- Updating management on portfolio status and options
- Working with other key staff to ensure integration of program level investment analyses, portfolio analysis, and strategic planning
- Leading ad-hoc Decision Analysis projects with franchises and program teams
The ideal candidate will combine in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical RD and excellent analytic skills with the ability to structure strategic alternatives and cogently summarize the important insights of complex analyses.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in a scientific or business discipline
- 3+ years of RD investment valuation or portfolio management experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience involving the pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industries
- A solid understanding of financial valuation techniques including
discounted cash flow analysis, net present value and internal rate of
return
- Expertise with Excel as well as proficiency using optimization,
simulation and decision analysis techniques and software (e.g. Crystal
Ball, @Risk, Precision Tree)
- In-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries
and substantial experience valuing pharmaceutical and biotechnology
RD portfolios
- An advanced degree in Business, Finance or Economics
- Knowledge of quantitative methods used to characterize and manage portfolio risk and return / Decision Analysis training
- The demonstrated ability to think strategically, maintain focus on key
issues, and translate complex problems into an appropriate analytic
framework
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
