Position Description:
Job Summary:
Deputy Director level position within the Viral Immunology and Cell Biology group, responsible for immunological testing and validation of novel vaccines and immunotherapeutic products against viral infectious disease targets, with a primary focus on Influenza. This position will liaise with Principal Investigators of specific exploratory projects as needed, as well as other functional heads, identify project milestones, and present project updates towards these milestones at team meetings and Discovery/senior management reviews. The incumbent will oversee and manage all internal activities and external contracts associated with their team’s objectives. This individual may also be required to be the Principal Investigator for an exploratory project in Discovery. In this role they will help develop the project plan, timelines and approach for achieving a Go/NoGo on the project PoC, within the agreed timeframe. A strong hands-on commitment to laboratory research, and mentoring of junior staff is required. The candidate will have management responsibility of scientist level positions and technologists within the Immunology group. The incumbent will also be responsible for developing the annual budget for their team and ensuring that it meets its fiscal objectives.
Job Responsibilities:
• Preparing and implementing preclinical project plans in liaison with project teams. Responsible for all data analysis and interpretation from a variety of sources within the group and evaluates impact on research projects. Provides input into go/no go decision points for projects.
• Capable of administering, coordinating or leading a project if required.
• Responsible for ensuring their team and projects meet their milestones.
• Management of a group of scientists/technologists and their workload.
• Mentoring direct reports in experiment design and data analysis and interpretation.
• Supervises and carries out precise experimental work to a consistently high standard to ensure accuracy of the data.
• Uses a variety of immunological techniques for pre-clinical evaluation of new vaccine candidates and/or immunotherapeutic antibodies. Maintains an appropriate level of familiarity with the scientific literature and new technology. Is able and willing to establish new techniques.
• Manage Laboratory to establish best practices, ensure safe working environment for all, monitor equipment upkeep, calibration and preventative maintenance, maintain storage database system, assist with equipment trouble-shooting if required.
• Ensures that all research findings are documented according to company policies and records of the group are kept up-to-date.
• Suitably trains and manages personal development of staff in their group.
• Responsible for making project updates/data presentations at project team, Discovery reviews and departmental meetings.
• Prepares all technical/summary reports needed for monthly project updates and in support of an exploratory projects moving to NV.
• Attend training and seminars, both on- and offsite to further their contribution to the departmental goals.
• Responsible for helping prepare the Immunology group budget project budgets if applicable.
• Follows technical, scientific and commercial developments in the field and uses the information to improve internal practices. Maintains current knowledge and level of expertise through scientific literature and/or conference attendance.
• Contributes to the assessment of new product opportunities for the company within existing direction, and writes and assesses complex project proposals.

Job Requirements:
• The right individual needs a PhD in Immunology with a minimum of 6 years’ vaccine related experience with extensive scientific experience in Influenza vaccine research and development, immunology of infectious diseases in general and in vitro and in vivo models of infection. A proven scientific leader within the Influenza research field with an overview of the vaccine development process is desired. Experience in managing a broad-based team focusing on in vivo characterization of vaccine safety, immunogenicity and efficacy as well as assay development are important. Good communication skills are required. Novel technology establishment experience in an immunology group for the preclinical evaluation of novel vaccines and immunotherapeutic products is also desired. Experience with departmental software for data analysis (Microsoft Excel, Softmax Pro and GraphPad Prism or other statistical analysis software) are considered essential. The abilities to coordinate multiple activities in support of defined project objectives, generate work plans, execute upon them and accurately analyze data are required.
