Associate, Private Debt
Role Specific Accountabilities:
Analyze Investment Opportunities
- Research, analyze and evaluate a variety of industries, companies and securities and assist in the overall evaluation process; conduct credit analysis of companies including loan-to-value analysis, preparation of relevant credit metrics. Build complex dynamic financial models to analyze investment opportunities; test assumptions and sensitivities
- Perform due diligence and forensic research on companies including past and projected performance, quality of management teams, financial analysis, investment merits and risks, expected returns, regulatory environment and industry dynamics; review 3 party due diligence reports (legal, accounting, industry strategic reviews, environmental, etc.)
- Perform valuation analysis of companies and securities, including DCF; assist in performing valuation reviews for portfolio companies
- Meet with company management and intermediaries to review past performance, strategy, outlook, industry issues, and other relevant topics as required
- Under the supervision of a Principal or Senior Principal, create investment recommendations outlining potential investment opportunities
- Assist in presenting investment recommendations to investment committees
Execute Private Debt Investments
- Manage discreet aspects of the execution of intellectual property and private debt investments as directed
- Liaise with external legal counsel, investment partners, and advisors
- Assist in negotiating and executing agreements and other transaction-related legal documentation
Monitor Private Debt Investments
- Review funding and distributions related to Private Debt investments
- Coordinate with CPPIB Finance Operations group with respect to monitoring ongoing IP and debt investments
- Monitor ongoing financial performance of portfolio assets; assist in performing valuation reviews for portfolio assets
- Assist in building and leveraging relationships with IP industry participants, investment banks and other capital providers
- Assist in evaluating credit mitigation strategies for underlying credit investments as required
- Coordinate and work with fellow colleagues in the Toronto office.
Build the Team
- Participate in and contribute to weekly departmental meetings and investment recommendation meetings
- Assist in the training and development of Private Investments department colleagues and participate in recruiting activities
If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:
- 4-8+ years experience in trade financing, leveraged finance, credit investing, MA, investment banking, or other relevant areas, or MBA with finance focus; At least 3 – 4 years experience working in Asia.
- Speak, read and write one of the following languages - Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Bahasa
- Forensic accounting and research experience a plus.
- CFA, CPA or CA designation is considered an asset
- Strong research, financial modeling, analytical and valuation skills, including sensitivity analysis
- Experience in conducting due diligence
- Strong interpersonal skills and business relationship skills, including negotiation skills
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Flexibility, adaptability, initiative, good judgement and “sense of the deal”
- Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure
- Team player who enjoys a high performance culture
- Demonstration of our guiding principles of integrity, partnership and high performance
- Willingness to travel
