Associate – Tax Compliance & Planning recruitment
Summary:
The Tax Compliance Planning Associate position is an integral part of HMC’s Tax Team, which is responsible for completing all tax filings for HMC’s tax-exempt and taxable entities. As a member of the Tax Team, the candidate will work with the Tax Team to gather necessary information for internal preparation of all federal and state tax returns. The candidate will also have primary responsibility for preparing tax workpapers and returns, in addition to working on related tax issues/initiatives. Excellent organizational and communication skills are required. Ideal candidate will also have a strong accounting background and be highly motivated and collaborative in nature.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare federal (domestic and foreign) and state tax returns, including IRS Forms 990, 990-T, 1120, 1120S, 1065, 8865, 5471, 926, and multiple state tax returns
- Determines and compiles tax accounting and investment information needed for the preparation of federal and state tax returns
- Prepare workpapers to support tax returns and other tax initiatives
- Participates in and contributes to refining internal processes and procedures
- Prepare initial FIN48 analysis
- Coordinates communication with internal accounting group and other functional areas within HMC and at Harvard University
- Develops and coordinates communication with tax advisors to support tax filings, tax audits, and other inquiries from tax authorities
- Assist with state and local income tax audits and other similar issues
- Work on special projects as requested
Qualifications:
- 1-3 years of public accounting firm experience
- BS in Accounting/Finance; CPA/MST designations preferred, but not required
- Experience with taxation of various entity types, including tax-exempt entities, desirable
- Working knowledge of FAS109 and FIN48 accounting principles
- Detail oriented, strong work ethic, and dedication to superior work product
- Ability to perform research and draft memos on corresponding issues
- Team player with “can do” attitude
- Willingness to work overtime when necessary
- Willingness to learn and develop expertise
- Self-starter with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Excellent professional interpersonal and verbal communication
- Experience with major tax preparation software
- Advanced proficiency in Excel spreadsheet creation and manipulation preferred
