The Department of Biology at James Madison University invites applications for a lecturer who will co-coordinate an inquiry-based introductory laboratory that focuses on major organismal concepts and teach primarily first year lectures or laboratories. Responsibilities will include: coordination and preparation for laboratories, supervision of undergraduate lab assistants and graduate teaching assistants, and teaching lab and lecture. The successful applicant will also work closely with other biology faculty in pedagogical initiatives and their implementation. Hiring will be as a renewable-term faculty position at the Lecturer level, for a 9/10-month appointment beginning Fall 2012.
Qualified applicants must have a Ph.D. in a biological science or biological science education and must show evidence of excellent teaching and communication skills, including familiarity with instructional technologies. A broad expertise in organismal biology preferred. Preference will be given to individuals with experience coordinating and/or preparing introductory biology labs.

The Biology Department at James Madison University currently serves over 800 undergraduate majors and 10 Master's students. It offers a wide variety of courses for biology majors, general education, and pre-health profession majors, including a 4-semester lab-intensive core curriculum. Interdisciplinary connections include biotechnology, materials science, biological mathematics, neuroscience, and environmental biology. The 42 full time faculty members are engaged in teaching and research in a broad range of sub-disciplines. We mentor over 150 undergraduate student researchers during the academic year and in the summer, using support from external or internal funds.
