Buyer Job Description

 

Accountability:

Deal with vendors and manufacturers, which often involve persuading potential vendors to undertake the manufacture of custom-designed items according to complex and rigid specifications. Research parts/components and under direction, negotiate with various vendors to find the best possible prices and best shipment lead times.  Resolve defective materials issues and arrange for returns to suppliers.  Ensure that proper authorizations and supporting documentation are received prior to non-inventory purchase making.  Interface with suppliers, engineering, manufacturing, finance and field service to provide information updates on any outstanding materials order.  Support manufacturing by tracking, expediting and ensuring on-time deliveries of parts and supplies to meet Master Schedule of manufacturing deadlines Provide support with replacement spares and warranty materials for breakdowns and for engineering design changes.  Negotiate requirements for preproduction samples, spare parts, customized technical literature, and patent and royalty protection.

 

Responsibilities:

·         Compile, update, and maintain the materials database for each manufactured unit.

·         Keeps abreast of market and product developments and interviews representatives for potential new sources of supply.

·         Purchases high volume items and materials that cover extended contract periods.

·         Ensure that suppliers have the necessary engineering and quality documentation to produce parts and supplies

·         Track suppliers ensuring timely delivery of ordered parts

·         Assist Inventory Clerks with the organization of the stockroom, stock procedures, and participate in inventory counts.

·         Locate suppliers and compare their products, prices, lead times, client service, as well as negotiate terms favorable to the Company under guidance from Manager of Procurement

·         Develop and maintain positive working relationships with suppliers and subcontractors

·         Locate qualified suppliers of standard-compliant parts (UL, TUV, etc.) and advising engineering to ensure these approved parts are specified in Company designs.

·         Support any engineering/client order changes by arranging delivery of required parts

 

Specialized or Technical Knowledge, or Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Business or Engineering, membership in National Purchasing Management Association a plus.  Good computer database management skills.  Good negotiating, interpersonal, and communication skills. At least 5 years purchasing experience, especially electronic components, with responsibility for negotiating agreements, prices, lead times, and delivery.  Ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to find solutions in sourcing/supplying urgently needed parts. 

 

Physical Requirements:  Lifting up to 75lbs in shipping and receiving and use of lifting equipment

 

Environmental Conditions:  Performs duties in an inside administrative office environment as well as a warehouse.

 

Major or Unusual Problems:  Must carry out responsibilities in a fast paced, expanding company. Accuracy of data entry and report generation must keep pace with growing needs and expectations of the position. 

 

Job Dimensions:  Performs duties under some supervision; must travel to warehouse locations in Erie, PA and retrieve parts/supplies from vendors; Deliver parts to vendors; undertake inventory control in subcontractor facilities, as deemed necessary.
