Initial appointment is 13 months with possible extensions up to 4 years. Extensions are based on workload and funding. This position is also career-seasonal (i.e., subject-to-furlough) in nature and does not provide employment on a year-round basis. You may work a minimum of 26 weeks but generally not more than 50 weeks a year. Actual work schedule and period of furlough is contingent upon funding and operational needs. DUTIES: Back to top The incumbent is a Geographic Information System (GIS) technician for Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument and Pipe Spring National Monument. Works in the Division of Resource Management and Research at Zion National Park and is supervised by the park GIS Program Manager. As a whole the GIS program supports park management and other divisions (maintenance, interpretation, visitor services and protection). Implements a variety of natural resource, cultural resource and fire management GIS and GPS projects within the three park area. Duties include fieldwork to collect resource information and in the office to synthesize and manage natural and cultural resource data; provides technical support of the GIS and GPS equipment; provides sample collection and maintenance of the park's air quality station. Also is the park's GPS coordinator. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires long periods of sitting in front of computer terminals. Some prolonged bending, crouching, lifting (up to 50 pounds), climbing and reaching are required to perform routine hardware maintenance and move equipment. WORK ENVIRONMENT : The work is usually performed in an office setting. Outdoor field work in varied climatic and terrain conditions is required. AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally HOT with daytime temperatures averaging 100 plus degrees Farhenheit in the summer and 55 degrees F in the winter. Night time lows range from 85 degrees F in the summer to 30 degrees F in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah located two miles from park headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane, Utah (25 miles from the park), St. George, Utah (45 miles) and in Cedar City, Utah (63 miles). Elementary school (grades K-6) is available in Springdale with bus service provided. Dixie College is located in St. George and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City. QUALIFICATIONS : To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below. GS-07 One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the federal service OR one full year of graduate education related to the position OR a combination of specialized experience and directly-related education. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience is work involving one or more aspects of cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy, where the work required similar knowledge and skills including spatial information collection and analysis, map creation and GPS data processing. Education: Successfully completed one year of graduate education meets the requirements for a GS-07. The one year (18 semester hours or the equivalent) of graduate study is concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position such as cartography, relevant mathematical and statistical sciences, or related sciences (i.e., physical geography, photogrammetry, geophysics or geodesy) or a related discipline. This education must be from an accredited academic institution. Combination: An equivalent combination of directly-related education and specialized experience, as noted above, can qualify you for this position. For example, qualifying would be six months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement) and 9 semester hours or 15 quarter hours of graduate study from an accredited academic institution (50% of the qualifying education). Education To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Failure to include this paperwork will make you ineligible for this position. Requirements 1 . You may be required to serve a trial period of 1 year. 2 . National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform. 3. You are required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. This position is full-time and "Subject to Furlough" which means the position is seasonal in nature and does not provide for employment on a full-time year-round basis.
