JOB DESCRIPTION

CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

 

SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, prepares, packages, and distributes medications; performs clerical duties related to the operation of a pharmacy; and performs other related duties as required.

 

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF THE JOB

1.      Selects drugs from stock for preparation: counts, pours, or mixes pharmaceuticals; places pharmaceutical products in appropriate containers and affixes labels to containers; packages and repackages pharmaceuticals to other clinics

2.      Monitors prescription inventory for expired pharmaceuticals that must be returned to manufacturer

3.      Receives prescriptions and obtains information from patients at pharmacy window to determine insurance eligibility; using a computerized system, enters prescription data to create a patient profile

4.      Maintain accountability for day-to-day patient reimbursement activities, workload and overall workflow.

5.      Work on patient's behalf to identify and assess reimbursement coverage options for those with insurance and to coordinate and/or investigate financial options for those without insurance.

6.      Work with physician offices and other Apothecary Shop retail locations to facilitate the process of obtaining prior authorization from third party payers in order to maximize patients' access to treatment.

7.      Monitor, follow-up with and record all insurance re-authorizations required by payers to help ensure compliance and continuity of treatment.

8.      Help support the appeal process to overturn insurance denials and/or benefit exclusions when needed.

9.      Answers telephones and takes messages for patient refill requests and related pharmacy business

10.  Helps to maintain the pharmacy in a clean and orderly condition

11.  Provides excellent customer service to all patients and medical professionals via phone or in person

12.  Ability to preserve confidentiality of protected health information (PHI)

13.  May be assigned to maintenance of pharmacy filing systems (hard copy, signature logs, invoices).

14.  May be assigned to prepare and track delivery instructions and invoices to assist delivery staff and common carriers responsible for home or office delivery

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

·         High School Diploma or Equivalent

·         National certification and state licensure current and in good standing

·         Bilingual preferred

·         A minimum of one year of retail pharmacy experience preferred

·         Professional demeanor and courteous attitude

·         Knowledge of basic computer operations

·         General knowledge of pharmacy laws, practices and procedures

·         Knowledge of brand name drugs and their generic equivalents

·         Knowledge of common medical terms/abbreviations and pharmacy calculations

·         Knowledge of insurance and third-party billing systems

·         Possess a professional appearance and excellent interpersonal communication skills

·         Must be able to prioritize and work in a fast paced environment

·         Ability to respect confidentiality of patient data

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

·         Typical day is based on eight hours in pharmacy setting

·         Must be able to stand for long periods of time and work in front of a computer screen

·         Some travel may be required to assist other pharmacies that are short staffed

·         All completed work must be checked by a licensed pharmacist
