Leading integrated producers of polymers and fibers, primarily for nylon, spandex, and polyester applications, with a business presence in more than 20 countries has a career opportunity for Chemical Licensing Engineer supporting technology licensing efforts around the world, primarily in China.
This individual will be expected to provide direct on-site process support for start up of licensed facilities, and travel as needed to do so. Anticipated start-up activity will result in significant time spent on assignment outside the US, the specific time and duration of the assignments are undefined at this time. Travel destination, length of assignment, and time between both domestic and foreign assignments will be contingent on license sales and needs but is expected to be primarily foreign assignments for the first few years following the training period. When not traveling in support of licensees, home base and job responsibilities will be at the LaPorte, TX. An initial training and development period of 12-18 months will also occur at the La Porte site.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop and implement process improvement ideas that result in improvements in yield performance, energy efficiency, and operating cost reductions.
• Provide technical support to operations areas, assisting with troubleshooting of complex problems associated with unit start-up or normal operation.
• Development of project justifications, including economic analysis, to ensure proper marginal value.
• Prepare and execute projects that improve the safety, operability and environmental performance of the plant
PRIMARY ROLE – SUPPORTING LICENSING ACTIVITY
• Support the design and implementation of large capital project activity, including basic data development.
• Participate and lead Management of Change (MOC) and Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), including revalidation PHA’s.
• Strong knowledge of process technology and equipment and ability to apply first principle knowledge to troubleshoot/bring online newly constructed facilities.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and work effectively in a team environment with operators, mechanics, and other support personnel.
• Assist in review of all basic design information including process flow diagrams, process and instrument diagrams, logic diagrams, process data sheets and mechanical data sheets to meet install/design expectations
• Assist in developing operating and commissioning procedures and review for accuracy.
• Analyze data during start up and provide guidance and recommendations on any corrective measures during start up.
• Assist in resolving issues regarding design and operating conditions for new projects, specifically related to raw material specifications, utility specifications and unit consumptions of raw materials, catalysts and utilities.
• Assist licensing design personnel in resolving design issues utilizing available operational and design experience.
• Assist process technology consultant in resolving any catalyst or licensee process performance issues.
• Provide training to licensee operators on the technology and operation
• Assist in monitoring unit preparation for commissioning
• Assist local operations team with startup activities and monitoring key process variables
While in training or at the La Porte Site:
• Provide technical support to operations areas, assisting with troubleshooting of complex problems. (This can include filling the role of Technical Support to Operations engineer).
• Development of project justifications, including economic analysis, to ensure proper marginal value, and management and implementation of small projects to support safety, environmental and economic initiatives.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
• 5 years work experience in the petroleum and/or chemical processing industry in a plant environment
• Ability to work effectively with all personnel regardless of function/level
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering
• Experience with PC-Based applications (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint minimum)
• Demonstrated skill in process or production engineering in a plant environment
• Must be available for international travel up to 80%, including long periods on assignment.
EXPERIENCE SKILLS PREFERRED:
• Knowledge of Process Safety Management systems including MOC, Relief Valve sizing and PHA’s
• Experience with data historian software, such as IP21 or ASPEN
• Ability to develop creative solutions to operations problems
• Strong organization and planning skills
• Working knowledge of data analysis software
• Proficient in Mandarin and English both written and verbal
• Demonstrated leadership skills leading teams of Operators and Engineers to start-up newly constructed facilities or troubleshooting issues associated with newly constructed facility start-up
• Experience commissioning and starting up new plant facilities
• Applied problem solving skills in chemical manufacturing environment
