Chief Architect

CHIEF ARCHITECT - DELL ENTERPRISE STORAGE PORTFOLIO

Join Dell and you'll work in a dynamic environment with other motivated, talented individuals who inspire greatness in their teammates. Our unique position as a technology leader ensures that you'll always be challenged in your work and supported in reaching your most ambitious goals.

The Chief Architect role is to be the technical design lead for the Dell Enterprise storage portfolio.

This role is not to do the detailed design of any single product, but rather to help shape design decisions and direction across a multi-product portfolio. This will include working with multiple product groups to implement Dell's "Fluid Data Architecture", working toward increased consistency and compatibility across products with different designs and heritage. It will also include understanding and assessing complex technology tradeoffs, and helping to make decisions on architectural direction amongst competing product group views.

The ideal candidate will have both the ability to go deep on technical and design issues, as well as the ability to see the big picture. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and must be able to help drive multiple technical groups to consensus.

The Chief Architect will participate, along with the Strategy team and the lead product marketing directors, in planning the overall Dell storage portfolio, as well as those elements in each individual product line that involve intersections with other Dell products. It is essential that the Dell "Fluid data architecture" result in excellent interoperability, compatibility, and consistency across the various products in the Dell storage lineup. Agreeing on these intersection points, the technologies used to achieve them, and the alignment of roadmaps across multiple products to implement them, is the primary responsibility of the Chief Architect.

Some requirements of the role include:

- No less than 10 years experience in high technology product design and coding

- No less than 5 years experience in enterprise storage technology design

- Participation in the design and implementation of at least one product recognized as both a commercial and technical success in the storage industry

- Working knowledge of C

- Extensive experience with Unix, Linux, or BSD operating systems

- Extensive knowledge of both block (SAN, iSCSI, Fibre Channel) and file (NAS, NFS, CIFS) storage subsystems

- Broad knowledge of the storage industry - relatively deep view of the major players in the storage industry (EMC, Netapp, others) and their product lines

- Solid understanding of customer needs and pain points and a demonstrated track record of designing products that use technology to better meet those needs

- Prefer a candidate whose background is in software development rather than hardware design, though that software may have been for a hardware product (eg, a file system for NAS, or the firmware for an array)

- In addition to hands-on engineering development and design experience, it is desirable that the candidate also have experience in either management or marketing.
