In this critical senior role, you will be instrumental in the development and implementation of a new business strategy for Carver Bank that emphasizes a broader lending platform from our current commercial real estate focus, including business, non-profit and consumer lending. By being accustomed to working collaboratively, you will partner with retail, credit and other team members and recruit and manage a new sales team to effectively build and grow this new business endeavor. We will rely on you to oversee completion of the troubled loan resolution strategy and oversee ongoing portfolio management of a diverse portfolio of commercial real estate, multifamily, construction, business, 1-4 family, SBA and consumer loans.
The Chief Lending Officer we select must also be able to assess and modify, where required, lending department strategy, personnel, vendors, policies and procedures, and make recommendations for other required change. The successful candidate will establish concrete goals, analyze new products, review other factors required for success, and present findings to the CEO and members of the Board of Directors. Must be able to provide timely, accurate and detailed reporting on the Bank?s loan portfolio each month as well as progress in resolving troubled loans and significant administrative goals.
Responsibilities:
- Build and manage a profitable department capable of providing financing products in the commercial, non-profit, small business and consumer markets. Product development going forward is likely to include consumer credit, designed to meet the needs of the Unbanked.
- Ensure that the portfolio includes geographic and asset categories that comply with Federal mandates and the Bank's historical focus on areas surrounding its branch footprint, e.g., urban communities.
- Significantly accelerate the new business development effort.
- Develop, manage and oversee underwriting standards and procedures that support safe, sound and profitable loan growth.
- Meet regulatory guidelines and maintain integrity of the portfolio, including critical administrative duties related to regulatory compliance and reporting duties.
- Resolve outstanding issues identified by the Bank's regulators.
- Proactively manage a team to meet departmental objectives, including coaching, mentoring, development and candid assessments of staff.
Qualifications:
This successful candidate must be highly competent, results-driven, ethical and able to grow the loan portfolio in a safe and sound manner. They must be able to demonstrate inspiring yet focused leadership and collaboration skills that will facilitate integration with other departments required for success. Additionally, we seek an individual with the following skills, knowledge and attributes:
- At least 10 years lending and lending management experience, with an emphasis in residential, commercial, small business, non-profit and consumer lending.
- Experience in workouts and restructuring.
- Excellent leadership, managerial, coaching and recruitment experience.
- Superior planning, analytical, execution and administrative skills.
- Excellent organizational/collaborative, communication and presentation skills.
- Formal credit training.
- Knowledge of thrift/bank regulatory issues and experience with relevant agencies.
- College education required; graduate school education a plus.
- Strong relationships within the New York City financial community preferred.
