Nemours is seeking a Clinical Lab Tech Supervisor (Microbiology) to join our team at the Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando, Florida.

This position is responsible for the oversight of an assigned Clinical Laboratory/Pathology section or work process; this includes all technical, clinical and quality aspects of the work area, and the supervision, development and oversight of staff in the assigned section, or performing the specific work process.
· Must be able to supervise a staff with technical clinical laboratory functions, ensuring appropriate quality, quantity and performance levels of staff in assigned section. Must be able to delegate tasks with appropriate follow-up.
· Must have skills for technical bench analysis. Such skills include the capacity to learn procedures and perform them repeatedly and accurately, noting aberrations in the procedure's performance (e.g., equipment malfunction). Such skills also include manual dexterity sufficient allow the manipulation of such equipment as small volume manual and automatic pipettes, instrument tubing and reagent cups and slides.
· Must be able to visually identify characteristics of specimens such as turbidity and hemolysis. Must be able to judge volume and amounts (e.g., must be able to determine that a specimen quantity is sufficient before beginning testing procedure).
· Must be able to work independently, organizing own work and working frequently without direct supervision of immediate tasks. Must use time efficiently, planning work with a goal of completion as soon as possible.
· Must be able to prioritize multiple (possibly urgent) tasks quickly and appropriately. For example, must be able to decide in which order a number of tests on an Emergency patient should be performed.
· Must have good judgment and decision making skills. Must be able to decide independently when further intervention is needed (e.g., when to inform a physician that a specimen is inadequate and may warrant recollection).
· Must relay and record information accurately. Must have high integrity when performing tests and report all results as obtained.
· Must take responsibility for maintaining and updating technical knowledge and knowledge of department and hospital procedures.
· Must interact well with a wide variety of customers: lab staff, patients, parents, visitors, nurses, physicians, administrators, vendors, etc. Must communicate with these groups professionally whether in person, by telephone or in other manners.
· Must work well in team situations, fostering good relations within the group. Must be able to work for team goals. Must demonstrate flexibility, e.g., must be able to make adjustments in schedule as department or hospital needs indicate.
· Must have neat and legible handwriting and be able to transcribe written materials accurately.
· Must be able to oversee section's budget, being responsible for routine payroll tasks as well as capital and other equipment and supplies. Must be able to evaluate products and activities using fiscal considerations and planning to maximize use of limited resources.
· Must be able to understand and use information systems for job performance, including laboratory and hospital information systems, as well as billing systems, QC systems, etc. Must be able to learn new information systems tools as these become required for job performance.
· Must be able to perform both long and short term planning for section needs. Must be able to present these plans to laboratory management effectively, pointing out urgent needs as well as long term considerations.
· Maintains appropriate section records, such as QC, maintenance, patient reports, QA/I and other documentation. Ensures that this information is readily retrievable and that section staff know and follow procedures for this documentation.
· Holds regular section staff meetings and maintains records of such meeting. Reviews laboratory and hospital policies with section staff.
· Evaluates information systems process within section and makes appropriate adjustments or recommendation. Maintains information databases as needed or assigned. Ensures that section staff are trained in use of information systems for work needs.
· Maintains section workload statistics, reporting any problems with these to laboratory administration.
· Communicates regularly with laboratory administration, informing about significant issues. Participates in laboratory and hospital meetings as assigned, attending any mandatory training sessions as needed. Participates in laboratory or hospital committees as assigned.
· Demonstrates proficiency in the care of all ages; neonates, pediatrics, adolescents and adults.
· Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Florida Supervisor License (Required)
- Nationally recognized certification as a Medical Technologist or equivalent. (ASCP or AMT) (Required)
- American Heart Association BLS required upon hire. Must be valid thru 2013
- Minimum of 5 years
