Machinist

The Ideal Candidates Will:

Set up, operate, or tend lathe and milling machines to turn, bore, thread, form, or face metal or plastic materials.

The Responsibilities Include:

Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and calipers.

Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.

Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.

Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.

Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.

Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.

Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.

Position and fasten work pieces.

Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

Inspect sample work pieces to verify conformance with specifications, using instruments such as gauges, micrometers, and dial indicators.

Study blueprints, layouts or charts, and job orders for information on specifications and tooling instructions, and to determine material requirements and operational sequences.

Adjust machine controls and change tool settings in order to keep dimensions within specified tolerances.

Move controls to set cutting speeds and depths and feed rates, and to position tools in relation to work pieces.

Start lath or turning machines and observe operations to ensure that specifications are met.

Select cutting tools and tooling instructions, according to written specifications or knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics.

Crank machines through cycles, stopping to adjust tool positions and machine controls to ensure specified timing, clearances, and tolerances.

Lift metal stock or work pieces manually or using hoists, and position and secure them in machines, using fasteners and hand tools.

Replace worn tools, and sharpen dull cutting tools and dies using bench grinders or cutter-grinding machines.

Position, secure, and align cutting tools in tool holders on machines, using hand tools, and verify their positions with measuring instruments.

 

The Minimum Requirements Are:

High School or Equivalent.

Minimum of 7 years experience with the setup and operation of manual, NC, and CNC turning and milling.

Requires the reading and interpretation of complex mechanical blueprints with GDT. Experienced with wide variety of precision measuring equipment. Basic knowledge of using measuring instruments, machine tools and electronic meters.

Ability to work independently or in a team environment.

Able to hold tight tolerance manual lathe machining (for example, 0.0002” tolerance of bearing fit shaft and hole).

Able to make complex parts with a manual mill.

Able to to make fixtures to support precision work for milling and lathe.

Able to trouble shoot.

Able to perform machine maintenance.

Cutting tool making and shaping.
Must have a “can-do” approach to every challenge and be a problem solver. 

Must be able to articulate verbally and in writing to clarify and resolve problems on all products.

Must be able to work day or evening shift as needed.
