Commercial Lines Underwriter Middle Market I

Review complex new business, renewals, endorsements, and quote requests to determine acceptability using established company guidelines and material (underwriting manual, bulletins, F C S, Bests Inc.).

  • Review and analyze agency performance based on production results, loss ratio (profitability) results, hit ratio, declination ratio, and other measures and manage the results as part of the underwriting team.
  • Establish line limits, negotiate, and place reinsurance when required.
  • May participate in agent educational meetings.
  • Review blanket excess coverages in compliance with established company procedures.
  • On specialized risks, determine proper company pricing.
  • When requested by underwriting supervisor, assist in the training of assistant and associate underwriters.
  • Research questionable risks using various company material and established technical expertise.
  • May perform audits of agencies having underwriting authority.
  • May perform other related duties and projects as assigned by supervisor/manager.
  • Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of commercial lines underwriting experience
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent
  • Good working knowledge of underwriting and pricing risks.
  • Good working knowledge of company underwriting standards and philosophy
  • Good working knowledge of all insurance coverages.
  • Working knowledge of state statutes and regulations pertaining to line assignments.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use personal computer with working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Capable of working as part of a team environment.
