Commodity Manager
Purpose of Position:
The primary role of this position is to manage short- and long-term Commodity, Contract, and
Supplier Management strategies of assigned area(s). Recommend and develop strategy
roadmap with suppliers; manage suppliers through objective measurements. Organize and
negotiate complex contracts. Ensures selected suppliers provide the best quality, delivery,
cost and support available on the global market for assigned commodities. Coordinates
purchases with the corporate level commodity teams as well as the group level to ensure the
buy is globally leveraged with target suppliers. Conducts these efforts with the highest level
of personal, professional and ethical conduct.
Essential Functions:
- In addition to Key Responsibilities as Purchasing Agent, Commodity Manager is responsible for the following:
- Locate, negotiate with and develop strategic suppliers globally to ensure continuous improvement in quality, delivery, inventory cost, support, and technological capability.
- Manage the transition of material to the most competitive global suppliers, ensuring continuous availability of material while minimizing excess.
- Actively participate in new product development assuring that proper commodity and supplier decisions are made when sourcing for new product development ensuring project cost and launch targets are met.
- Track and control total spend project timing and cumulative PPV within assigned commodities to establish and meet performance objectives year over year.
- Maintain current knowledge regarding global market conditions affecting supply chain, develop and defend with data, corresponding strategies to ensure meeting policy deployment objectives.
- Proficient utilization of web-based procurement tools and online bidding activity to ensure performance objectives are realized.
- Train and develop purchasing agents in the performance of routine procurement activities.
- Bachelor's degree in materials or business management, with 5 years experience in materials or procurement. Minimum two-year college education in a business or technical curriculum with 8 or more year's relevant experience and APICS or ISM certification.
- In-depth knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, including MRP, inventory management, and planning systems.
- Knowledge of supplier relationships, contract negotiations, JIT/demand flow philosophies, and legal issues involved with purchasing
- Demonstrated proficiency with web based procurement and online auction tools
- Documented track record of successful global sourcing performance
