Comptroller / Director of Finance recruitment
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officers, and working in conjunction with the Director of Program and Staff Planning, the Comptroller/Director of Finance will be responsible for managing the overall finance, accounting and budgeting functions for the organization and will oversee governmental contracting, foundation grants and compliance reporting. The Comptroller will work closely with the CEO, COO, the DPSP and the rest of the management team.
The Comptroller/Director of Finance will be responsible for all financial activities, including the following:
- Internal and external financial reporting
- Accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, cash flow planning and forecasting
- Preparation of federal and state tax returns, regulatory and compliance reporting
- Payroll, accounts payable and accounting operations
- Asset and investment management under the direction of the Board’s investment committee and preparing regular update reports on investments and assets for the Board
- Coordinating internal and external audits
- Oversight of the organization’s system of internal controls and active management of exceptions
The Comptroller must ensure that appropriate and timely financial reporting and insight, including forward-looking budgets, are provided to leadership and the Board of Directors in concert with the CEO and COO.
Other key responsibilities include:
- Developing his/her working relationship with leadership team as a “trusted advisor” and “business partner.”
- Anticipating potential issues which may have an impact on the organization and providing financial, strategic and tactical counsel and expertise to the CEO, COO and other senior officers.
- Collaborating with and influencing executive-level managers through ongoing sharing and reporting of key financial data.
- Enhancing a financial infrastructure including appropriate tools and systems, with an emphasis by the finance team on a rigorous, detail-orientation which underlies all reporting, financial analysis, budgeting and forecasting.
- Handling bookkeeping transactions for general and project support, such as releasing project revenues in association with grant requirements, project timelines and deliverables.
- Oversight of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting and analysis for the organization.
- Oversight of monthly, quarterly and annual investment reporting and analysis for the organization.
- Developing and overseeing the departmental budgets and assessing the organization’s performance against annual budgets as they relate to the organization’s long-term strategy.
- Ensuring effective cost management across the organization.
- Management of outside consultants and constituents, including auditors, bankers and investment managers on an ongoing basis.
- Partnering with the CEO and COO and other members of the senior staff to develop methodologies such as a financial and operational scorecards to provide pertinent information, trends and data as essential tools for managing day to day operations.
- Providing leadership to department staff and help to foster a culture of service featuring teamwork, ingenuity and skill to provide prompt, effective support across the organization.
Key Requirements:
- Five to seven years’ financial management experience, including at least three years as a Director of Finance or Comptroller in a non-profit with a diverse project revenue stream and demonstration of effectively assuming increasing responsibilities.
- Ideally the successful candidate will be experienced with managing the financial functions for a sophisticated, nonprofit entity with multiple funding sources, including government contracts. Familiarity with FAR and governmental accounting is essential.
- Progressive financial management experience demonstrating successful responsibility for: budgeting, forecasting, nonprofit and fund accounting, capital deployment, strategic planning, taxation, cash management, risk management, investment reporting and compliance.
- Ability to deal with ambiguity, abstract reasoning skills and excellent analytical skills are required.
- Bachelor of Science in Accounting or Finance is required as is a CPA.
