Large Group Underwriters directly contribute to the company achieving its financial and strategic goals for employer accounts with 51 or more members. As the financial professionals who identify, evaluate and price risk, large group underwriters are responsible for balancing increased revenue, operating income and membership goals while protecting the company's bottom line from loss.
This position can be located in our San Francisco or Woodland Hills office.
Responsibilities:
-Applies appropriate actuarial factors and rating methods to determine potential exposure to BSC's products.
-Integrates competitor's rating, pricing practices, provider's networks in new business and renewal pricing analytics.
-Analyzes customer specific financial condition, employee demographics and past claim experience to determine degree of risk, benefits and rates for large or complex employers.
-In partnership with the sales team, develops proposed rating position and benefit offering strategies while balancing growth and profitability objectives.
-Participates in sales negotiates on new and renewal business with brokers and large consulting firms in obtaining important case specific information (e.g., participation rates) and finalizes proposed rate/premium offerings.
-Participates in sales presentation meetings as an underwriting subject matter expert in underwriting.
-Conducts analytical studies to assess and predict cost of healthcare (COHC)
-Performs complex modeling including utilization data, COHC, shared risk projections on new business prospects to optimize competitive offers.
-Serves as a mentor to underwriters, provides feedback and coaching on more complex cases including alternative funding arrangements.
-Provides advice on underwriting principles and techniques to other departments and functions including senior management.
Education/Requirements:
-A BA/BS in a related field such as finance, mathematics or accounting and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. A graduate degree is desirable.
-Comprehensive knowledge of medical underwriting principles, practices and techniques.
-Comprehensive knowledge of the company's financial goals and drivers.
-Advanced modeling and predictive skills.
-Demonstrated highly effective group presentation, communication and negotiation skills.
-Comprehensive knowledge of the California health plans and key financial drivers.
-Ability to perform as a team leader of cross-functional teams.
-Knowledge of advanced analytical software tools.
Minimum Experience Level:
Seven to ten years of experience with an undergraduate degree
Five to eight years of experience with MBA
Supervisory Responsibilities:
-Expected to mentor lower level underwriters and provide work direction, guidance and feedback.
-Serve as team leader of cross functional work teams.
