Our client, with divisional headquarters located near Nashville, Tennessee is the largest manufacturer and marketer of water heaters in North America. With operations worldwide, they manufacture commercial water heating equipment as well as a comprehensive line of residential water heaters that are marketed through the plumbing wholesale channel and a fast-growing retail channel.
Duties and responsibilities:
The Controls Engineer position will be responsible for the development and execution of the overall controls/automation strategy at the Ashland City plant and regional distribution center. Specific areas of responsibility include the following:
1. Provides technical guidance to help support production throughput, efficiency, first pass yield, cost reduction, and safety improvements.
2. Responsible for the training and development of the control techs and electronics techs.
3. Provides technical support to new equipment purchases.
- Updates standardized control specifications for different levels of machine controls.
- Supports Manufacturing Engineering by involvement in the quote design review process, reviewing all control documentation, establish strong relationship with vendor's control team.
4. Develops controls systems, procedures, and audit systems.
- Develops program modification matrix and centralized software data collection system.
- Works with controls team to document and standardize process improvements.
5. Provides technical support to existing equipment.
- Collects and stores all control parameter settings for plant equipment.
- Develops upgrade plans for obsolescent equipment controls.
- Improves existing control packages to become more reliability and production/maintenance friendly.
- Reviews and updates electrical PMs for controls cabinets; schedules cabinet restorations.
- Troubleshoots software issues.
6. Benchmarks and implements new technology in partnership with key stakeholders.
7. Performs other duties as necessary.
Skills and capabilities required:
1. Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a technical group.
2. Defines the data structure layout and data flow model for hardware selection and software development.
3. Selects the physical communication media, network architecture, and protocols in order to complete system design and support system development.
4. Develops a functional description of the automation solution using rules established in the definition stage to guide development and programming.
5. Performs detailed project design for development and deployment purposes.
6. Updates standardized control specifications for different levels of machine controls.
7. Coordinates jobs/projects with outside vendors/contractors.
8. Fosters an environment conducive to high employee engagement.
9. Communicates frequently with internal and external stakeholders regarding various issues.
10. Possesses broad understanding of production equipment and processes including assembly lines, robotics, fabrication, paint shops, foaming, presses, glassing and other equipment.
11. Applies structured problem solving approach to complex process and equipment issues.
12. Multi-tasks in a fast paced manufacturing environment.
13. Possesses strong organizational and project management skills.
14. Possesses strong computer skills (MS Office, spreadsheets, CAD, etc…)
Education level and/or certification and training requirements:
1. Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline highly preferred.
2. 5+ years of directly related experience in a lean manufacturing environment.
3. 3+ years with Allen Bradley; previous experience in Allen Bradley 5000 required.
4. 3+ years of experience setting up and programming various types of drives is required.
5. Firm knowledge of OSHA and TOSHA rules and regulations.
6. Six sigma certification preferred.
7. Prior experience with fabrication/press/welding preferred
