Due to continued growth, we have an excellent opportunity for a Controls Engineer for our UMS division. Universal Multishot SystemsTM (UMS) is a subsidiary of the MGS Mfg. Group. Located in Germantown, Wisconsin, UMS specializes in designing and building custom molding and automation equipment, including portable injection units and rotary platens.
Essential Tasks/Duties and Responsibilities
- Test and trouble-shoot controls of plastic injection machinery prior to shipment as part of quality assurance. Devices dealt with include programmable logic controllers, electronic operator interface hardware, various types of instrumentation (pressure sensors, temperature sensors, etc…) and basic switches.
- Perform similar equipment-proving and trouble-shooting tasks in the field at customer production sites.
- Detail designs for electrical controls systems. This includes conceptual work, production of finalized CAD documentation for construction and archival purposes, in some cases evaluation, specification, and selection of components, and production of as-built drawings after machine testing.
- Program and document programs for programmable logic controllers, electronic operator interface devices, variable frequency drives, and similar programmable control hardware. Typically this will entail working with and modifying existing template software.
- The individual may be required to develop complete programs from scratch
- Understand typical industrial wiring schematics and diagrams.
- Understanding of basic industrial controls circuitry (emergency stop, typical motor starting circuits).
- Learn all aspects of plastic injection molding machine controls.
- Assist in ancillary production functions such as purchasing, costing, and assembly.
- Determine and document bill-of-material lists and order components for specific projects.
- Work with outside vendors such as electrical panel building shops in order to assure designs are properly executed and schedules maintained.
- Assist in mechanical assembly or other production duties, not necessarily directly related to electrical controls, in order to meet deliveries.
- Assist in organizational activities not necessarily directly related to electrical controls; such as inventory adjustments, re-arrangement of work areas, and similar activities.
- Provide customer service technical support.
Experience and Skills:
Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering and a minimum of 5-7 years of experience. Automation experience is required. The ideal candidate must be capable of programming A/B controls, have strong trouble-shooting skills and must have an in-depth knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics.
