Copper Economist recruitment

A leading global commodities trading house is looking for an experienced analyst to manage and lead the Copper Demand and Markets team. You will have responsibility for developing a lucrative section of our Copper portfolio, and the skills of the team that produce it.

In your career to date you should have demonstrated commercial and strategic awareness and that will enable you to assist in securing a market leadership position for the Copper Team, and deliver strong growth in future revenue and profits.

Main Responsibilities:

Management

• Lead, guide and mentor three direct reports. (Two are London-based, one in China) Take responsibility for their work plan, training needs, appraisals and overall career development.

• Train and mentor junior staff in the specifics of the copper market where appropriate.

• Assist the Group Manager in building and maintaining a high-performing team.

• Take responsibility for growing revenue and profit associated with the portfolio.

Data Collection and Analysis

• Oversee and take the lead role in the analysis and interpretation of data on the overall copper market, including the global supply/demand balance, regional market positions, stock developments and price trends.

• Oversee and participate in the analysis and interpretation of data in the areas of refined copper consumption and semi-fabricated products in order to maintain the firm’s reputation for high-quality work in this important area.

• Manage, operate and maintain the team’s copper price model.

Report Writing

• Manage, edit and compile high quality sections for the Copper Monitor, Copper Studies and Copper Quarterly.

• Collaborate with other Copper Teams to produce the Copper Long Term Outlook.

• Learn and participate in research across the copper value chain, including the supply side.

External Liaison

• Respond to client and internal requests for data and opinions in a timely and professional manner.

• Develop relationships and maintain contact with key industry players.

• Deliver keynote presentations on copper at a variety of conferences (minimum 3 per year).

• Visit existing and potential clients on a regular basis.

Your background:

To succeed in this role, you should be a graduate in a numerate discipline, familiar with handling large data sets and understanding mathematical concepts, including econometrics. You can quickly identify key trends and drivers in order to generate perceptive conclusions and unique market insight. You should have a good understanding of the metals industry. In terms of work style, you should be driven to meet objectives, targets and deadlines, and be capable of coaching junior colleagues to achieve their full potential.  You must be confident talking to market participants in a range of settings, from telephone research calls to speaking at major conferences. 

Salary Range: £55,000 - £65,000, dependent on experience, plus bonus and benefits.
