Posted Position Title: Counsel Intellectual Property Career Level: Experienced Function Legal Function Segment: Intellectual Property Location: United States U.S. State, China or Canada Provinces: Texas City: Houston Postal Code: 77041-8200 Relocation Assistance Yes Role Summary/Purpose: GE Oil Gas (GE OG) is hiring the position of Intellectual Property (IP) Counsel, reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property. The position is located in Houston, Texas, USA. This position will provide a full range of intellectual property services to GE OG, including managing and strategic planning of patent portfolios and advising clients on a broad range of patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret matters. Essential Responsibilities - Building a strong Intellectual Property culture and compliance program - Preparing and negotiating intellectual property transactional and licensing agreements, and supporting other transactional agreements (e.g. supply chain and sales agreements) from the intellectual property perspective, and conducting MA intellectual property due diligence - Conducting patent clearances through proactive processes to avoid IP disputes, including advance infringement reviews and competition IP portfolio analysis, clearance opinion drafting, and managing outside counsel clearance opinion preparation - Demonstrated ability to develop and implement standards ensuring procurement of patents of the highest quality - Organizing and running efficient and constructive patent evaluation screening and boards and developing and implementing procedures to harvest, protect and defend intellectual property - Aligning GE OGs intellectual property and technology strategy with the GE Growth Playbook, including strategies to monetize non-strategic IP - Managing outside and in-house counsel in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications - Conducting quality reviews of patent applications - Providing IP training on patents, copyrights, trade secrets and related matters - Working with the HR, Engineering and IT teams to ensure that our practices, processes and procedures provide physical and electronic protection of IP - Proactive reviews of technical papers and other marketing material for appropriate use and intellectual property content - Managing of IP disputes and litigation, working closely with legal colleagues in the litigation department and the business - Proactive coordination and implementation of GE corporate-wide and business-wide IP initiatives Qualifications/Requirements: - Minimum of 7 years active practice in intellectual property - U.S. qualified lawyer (admission before any state bar) and registration to practice before the U.S. Patent Trademark Office Additional Eligibility Qualifications GE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening. Desired Characteristics - Bachelor's Degree Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or other appropriate technical expertise - Experience in the oil gas and turbo machinery industries desirable - Superior advocacy skills, and the ability to effectively and efficiently communicate in writing and orally, an aptitude for practical negotiation, the capability to think clearly and quickly under pressure, and the composure to satisfy multiple and competing interests. English fluency required, other European language skills desired - A strong commitment to integrity and professionalism - A superior academic record and work history that affirmatively demonstrates leadership - Excellent interpersonal, diplomatic abilities and a well-developed sense of humor - Substantial experience with and ability to use legal related technology - Both law firm and in-house experience desirable - Preferred experience in: * Preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the US and Europe * Managing the preparation and prosecution of patent applications by other attorneys * Evaluating and preparing patent opinions * Litigation of patent and other intellectual property disputes * Dealing with and advising managers and individual contributors with respect to intellectual property matters; particularly at the international level * Preparing and negotiating proprietary information agreements and other intellectual property related contracts such as licensing and technology transfer agreements * Evaluating and advising on intellectual property disputes * Managing international intellectual property matters and working with general lawyers in solving mixed intellectual property / general legal problems Why join one great company when you can join many?
