Data Engineer
Alpheus Communications, a well established provider of SONET, VOICE, IP/DATA and Metro-Ethernet based solutions to carrier and enterprise customers, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Data Engineer to join our team for around-the-clock surveillance, troubleshooting and maintenance at our 24X7 Network Operations Center.
Job Responsibilities and Duties
- Review log events and operate network management applications to perform fault detection, identify performance metrics, and generate reports to support specific service level requirements.
- Develop and maintain documentation and information, e.g. network diagrams, typologies, contact information, etc.
- Establish processes to test applications and devices before planned network deployment to quantify their performance and recommend steps to ensure they are optimized.
- Serve as third-tier support for network operations team when needed.
- Review SNMP alerts, use protocol-line analyzers (sniffers) and conduct log forensics in order to determine root cause analysis and resolution of complex issues.
- Must be able to work unsupervised and maintain the integrity of the department.
- Maintain a working log of actions and testing completed during outage scenarios.
- Establish best practice standards and policies surrounding deployment and administration of infrastructure. Participate in updating present written processes and in the development of new processes, in conjunction with the NOC manager.
- Perform testing and turn-up of new circuits for internal and external customers using Spirent through the coordination with field technicians.
- Create and manage trouble tickets using Remedy Ticketing System.
- Coordinates maintenance actions during planned maintenance windows.
- Effectively utilize problem/change management systems to document problems and activities performed during the course of service restoration.
- Use Network Management tools such as Netcool, MRTG and Solarwinds to Pro-actively monitor network elements and correlate events and alarms to identify the root cause of a failure.
- Interface with Field Technicians and Perform operational acceptance on new network elements.
Job Requirements or Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Associate’s Degree preferred
- A minimum of 5 years planning, designing, operating, maintaining and troubleshooting IP Service Provider networks is required
- CCNA, CCNP Certification or ability to become CCNP certified
- Prior experience with, and expertise in many of the following protocols technologies: BGP, OSPF, VOIP, MPLS, Metro-Ethernet, 802.1Q, 802.1ad, VLANs/STP, IPv4 IPv6, TCP (internals flow control), SIP-Trunking, HSRP/GLBP/VRRP, LACP, TACACS, IPSEC, GRE VPNs, Netflow, DNS and HTTP
