What we do:
ITHAKA (www.ithaka.org) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the academic community use digital technology to preserve the scholarly record and to advance research and teaching in sustainable ways. ITHAKA is headquartered in New York, NY with additional offices in Ann Arbor, MI and Princeton, NJ.
What you will do:
The Data Manager works in the Public Systems Department of ITHAKA, supporting ongoing and ad hoc tasks related to books and journal data management in ITHAKA, primarily for Content Management’s Production Unit and the JSTOR site (www.jstor.org). Metadata, text, and page images are sent, either according to a schedule or on demand, to publishers, libraries, and business partners of ITHAKA, and the Data Manager is responsible for scheduling, writing and maintaining any programs needed to facilitate this exchange of data and for responding to inquiries from the business partners. This involves gaining a deep understanding of and expertise of ITHAKA’s journal data formats, validation, and usages. Requires a clear, precise communication style, and an ability to respond to questions in ways appropriate to the audience.
- Shepherding and marshalling of new data through the monthly release of new digitized content to ITHAKA’s public servers. Involves data moving between servers, UNIX shell scripting, some java and XSL applications, reporting to and collaborating with varied relevant staff about the state of and problems with the data release, executing specific switch-flipping at specific times in the cycle.
- Data exports of ITHAKA data to interested parties and partners which involves running UNIX shells scripts and batch jobs to generate batches of data in different formats, and dispersing these batches. This can involve altering those same shell scripts and transformation scripts to suit a new or evolved purpose.
- Data imports from external partners. This involves fetching or receiving data from external partners, and ingesting it into ITHAKA systems through scripts. Involves follow-on collaboration with Production staff to verify that the imported data are useful and correct.
- Reporting about ITHAKA data and activities. This involves generating some existing reports for different ITHAKA units to consume, and occasionally deriving or generating ad hoc reports for special purposes.
- Front-line support of the Production Unit for various systems. This involves problem identification with legacy CGI and shell programs, basic maintenance of the off-the-shelf OCR system used at ITHAKA, reporting to the programming staff at ITHAKA about problems.
