Position Summary: Manages large, complex DB2 database systems including enterprise-wide portal databases supporting Hub applications. Responsible for developer support, SQL reviews, design reviews, database tuning, and data security. Acts as a high-level coordinator for projects requiring a DB2 database to insure the appropriate database design and best practices are used to support short and long term business requirements. Serves as a technical mentor for other database administrators. Has the ability to evaluate new technology and assess its application in the Staples environment. Has an understanding of logical data modeling processes and is able to develop a physical design model from a logical design model. Develops best practices for all aspects of database administration. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: - Plans, implements and supports multiple DB2 databases. - Utilizes expert knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) to assist in performance tuning or design consulting on complex DB2 databases. - Performs proactive database performance monitoring; evaluates and implements alternative solutions. - Has strong working knowledge of enterprise-shared databases: warehouses, portal databases,ODS. - Manages DBA project activities coordinating with project manager and/or application manager. - Works with development teams and infrastructure teams to secure and protect valuable data. - Leads data disaster recovery planning and execution with the disaster recovery team and internal team members. - Researches new features and implementations for Staples Environments. Determines risk of various configurations and options for database administration and is able to communicate issues to development staff, managers and team. - Leads and develops internal standards for database administration and database system documentation. Provides guidance and advice to develop database administration best practices. Provides mentoring to DBAs and developers in database administration practices. - Designs and implements complex databases: develops physical data design; facilitates formal design reviews for database physical designs; defines, documents and executes: referential integrity constraints and complex database objects. Identifies index requirements and determines storage requirements. - Focuses on identifying opportunities for process improvement and driving implementation of those improvements.
