General Purpose of Position

The Deli Department Manager provides excellent guest satisfaction through the management and leadership of all deli employees.  This will be done by maintaining high standards of quality, variety, selection, food safety and sanitation for all products produced and sold in the deli.  This is to be accomplished in accordance with Piggly Wiggly’s policy on business ethics through consistent and honest dealings with employees, vendors, guests, and all outside parties, quickly processing sales efficiently, operation of computer systems, and safeguarding Company assets. 

This position is a role model and leader and must solve problems, make informed decisions and manage the workforce and time wisely in order to achieve maximum results.  In absence of other store management personnel, this position should always be ready to handle the store and its operations as if part of their regular responsibilities.

Position Responsibilities

·         Provide exemplary service by ensuring each guest receives quality service by providing a friendly environment, having a solid product knowledge, and maintaining a clean department

·         Responsible for monitoring and making decisions regarding Profit and Loss of deli department, wages, inventory, and sales.

·         Maintain awareness of and promote advertisements, promotions, and Company programs while also making sure deli employees are aware of and promoting the same.

·         Achievement of optimum profitability through exciting and realistic merchandising, sufficient quantity, superior quality, and variety.

·         Be prepared for hot case service, special orders, lunchmeat requests, and for operation of various food preparation machines.

·         Perform temperature and tare checks on a daily basis.

·         Perform suggestive sales, up-selling, and recommendations with guests

·         Achieve and maintain a safe and clean working environment for personnel through safety awareness and training, well maintained equipment, and sanitary conditions in compliance with Company standards, state, and federal regulations.

·         Be aware of and sensitive to waiting guests, minimizing the delays, and acknowledging their patience and presence.

·         Supervision of, staffing, orienting, training, scheduling, coaching, and managing all deli personnel in execution of daily activities

·         Achievement of effective coordination of production, merchandising and sales through on-going planning, direction, communication, goal-setting, brainstorming and teamwork.

·         Ordering, unloading, transporting, and stocking inventories to maintain appropriate product levels and minimize shrink.

·         Prompt reporting to Store Management any guest situations that cannot be fully handled at this level.

·         Compliance with and ensuring compliance of others with established Company policies and standards, such as safekeeping of Company funds and property, personnel practices, security, sales, and record-keeping.

·         Any other tasks as assigned from time to time by Store Operator.

 

Essential Skills and Experience:

·         Must have at least 5+ years experience working in a Deli department 2 of which must be in a management role

·         Retail experience is a must, retail grocery is a preferred plus

·         Ability to work varied hours/days including nights, weekends and holidays, including opening and closing department as needed

·         Ability to merchandise and manage deli operations and staff effectively, including developing employees, building relationships, fully utilizing employee skills, and ensuring national and regional compliance with policies and procedures are being executed properly

·         Ability to adjust priorities and manage time wisely in a fast-paced environment

·         Ability to maintain a fair, consistent set of standards as they apply to the deli workforce

·         Ability to read, count, and write to accurately complete all documentation

·         Computer skills are necessary

·         Skill in handling knives

·         Maintain a professional, well-groomed appearance in the appropriate attire as stipulated by the dress code

·         Must be at least 18 years of age

·         Must have prior retail or deli experience with a retail knowledge, including demonstration of instructing/training employees

·         Prior experience in a role of responsibility over sales volume in a like environment

·         Ability to think outside of the box and be receptive to change

·         Must be able to self start, work independently and as a team, and complete tasks in a timely manner

·         Strong organizational, verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

·         Physical ability to stand for extended periods and to move and handle boxes of merchandise, which entails lifting (up to 65 lbs), bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, and performing all functions as set forth above

·         Exposure to cold/hot, cleaning chemicals, solvents, machinery, cutting saws, sharp objects, raw food handling, and moderate noise levels.
