Design Engineer Job in Birmingham, Midlands UK

1. Purpose
1.1 To be an integral part of a design platform and lead the design and development of new 
and existing products in order for Access Control products to perform.
1.2 To take the lead in the development of new and existing products from initial concept 
through to the final validation testing.
1.3 To liaise with customers and product engineers in the identification of specific product 
test specifications.
1.4 To develop and execute development timing plans to meet the product specification, in 
line with agreed resource availability.
1.5 To test products, analyse results, make recommendations and produce technical reports,
as required.
1.6 To be able to solve product failures and problems with the aid of CADDS5, CATIA 5
Analysis software, as appropriate.
1.7 To conduct reviews, having and providing an understanding of tolerance studies and 
F.M.E.A.’s for new and existing products.
1.8 To design, build and/or supervise (both internal and external contractors) innovative 
test fixtures and control equipment.
1.9 Liaise with suppliers to produce component and assembly drawings to support prototype
and production releases.
1.10 Release prototype and production drawings in line with Engineering Timing Release
Schedule (ETRS).

Context and Environment of Job
TEST
1.1 To plan and execute all testing in line with product requirements and specifications and 
produce written technical reports with conclusions and recommended actions.
1.2 To analyse test failures and produce written technical reports with conclusions and 
recommended actions.
1.3 To design and build special purpose test fixtures and control equipment for the safe and
satisfactory testing of products.
1.4 To ensure a safe and clean working environment at all time for self and others.
1.5 To conduct ‘on the job’ training of personnel, and to keep pace with new technology 
within the test department.
DESIGN
1.6 To design a product, using the correct consideration of the Vehicle System to 
defined product/project goals and targets, set for time, cost and performance.
1.7 To produce, interrogate and modify, (as appropriate), existing CAD components, 
sub assemblies and full assembly details with the assistance of the Supplier.
1.8 To utilise, as necessary or where appropriate, Analysis Software and Techniques, 
both proactively (prior to or replacing testing) or reactively (following test and/or
failure).
1.9 To identify and resolve product test and field failures and problems with the aid of CAD
and appropriate statistical techniques.
1.10 To conduct design reviews, product tolerance studies and team activity on F.M.E.A.’s
for the design platform, as and when required, to ensure compliance of design intent to
design Rules, Existing Product History and Past Concerns (from testing and field data).
MEANS UTILISED – CRITICAL FACTORS OF JOB
TEST
1.1 To effectively utilise the test area resource and maximise test capacity.
1.2 To ensure safety critical assemblies are tested in accordance with Company/Customer standards and commitments
1.3 To ensure comprehensive assessment and analysis is made of all tested samples.
DESIGN
1.4 To produce drawings in accordance with standard Company procedures
1.5 Solid Modelling of Assemblies, incorporating and checking Component Data supplied by Partner Suppliers.
1.6 Interrogation of Product Design by:
- Strength/stress calculation
- Simulation and Analysis activities (with specialist assistance)
- Correct formalised Tolerance Stack ups
- Class Detection within assemblies

4. Internal and External Functional Contacts
- All work undertaken with the full support of the designated platform’s Project 
Leader
- Liaise with all necessary departments
- Liaise with customers and suppliers
5. Incumbent's Activities
All activities in the effective operation of Product Development – design and testing.
Candidate Requirements:
Minimum BSc or BEng Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
Experience: 
Test/Development Engineer
5 years Automotive Components Industry or Vehicle Manufacture experience
Knowledge of stamping, injection moulding, electronics, electrics and pneumatics
Familiar with CADD’S/CATIA 5 system employing both surface and solid modelling
