The Developmental Editor (DE) has final responsibility for the content development of published continuity publications for assigned product lines with a primary focus on the quality of online products. S/he is the principal in-house contact for assigned continuity products for both authors/editors and other departments. S/he also has final responsibility for ensuring that manuscripts meet KLI’s editorial quality standards (only for category 1  continuity and new online content) and are delivered on time (only for category 1 continuity products).

Tasks Responsibilities:
• Content/product development (solid line)
– Assess and enhance editorial quality (including performing regular spot checks of the XML content and online products) of existing continuity products;
– Keep online products up-to-date with the help of external editors/advisors or research assistant.
– Assess quality of manuscripts of new online products by review of first sample content. Joint responsibility: Acquisition Editor reviews author submission against contract i.e. proposed Outline and the Developmental Editor reviews for editorial quality;
– Support the Acquisition Editor in instructing the author/editor on editorial quality of new online products;
– Collaborate with Marketing and EP Services to enhance functionality of online products;
– Support the Acquisition Editor and EP Services to develop new products and large online product enhancements;
– Monitor legal developments in practice area;

• Author management (solid line)
– Maintain relationship with authors/editors (this includes being the central contact person for authors/editors for existing continuity products and after acceptance for publication of new continuity products);
– Instruct authors/editors on editorial (only for category 1 continuity products) and content quality of existing continuity products;
– Instruct authors/editors of continuity products on publishing schedule and enhancements;
– Ensure that authors/editors submit their manuscripts on time (for category 1 products) and the enhancements as agreed;
– Ensure that all contractual obligations are met by KLI and authors/editors (including CTPs for category 1 products) for assigned product line.
– Renegotiate and close contracts with existing authors/editors for existing continuity publications in close consultation with either the publishing manager or publishing director.

• Publishing calendar/Editorial quality (dotted line)
– Develop annual budget for all existing continuity products (journals/loose leafs/yearbooks/online);
– Update MISER;
– Prepare and submit to CSG category 1 manuscripts according to schedule and ensure that manuscripts meet the editorial quality standards as set by this group.

• In-house product line communication (solid line)
– Collaborate with Marketing on review of promotional copy for substantive accuracy and education of the Sales team on existing continuity products;
– Provide assigned product line information to in-house staff;
– Draft monthly reports for Publishing Director.

Education Experience (factual qualifications):
• Law degree (LLM or J.D. or equivalent degree)
• Three years’ experience in law practice
• Five years’ experience in legal editorial position
• Fluency in English, preferably native speaker; passive knowledge of at least 2 other languages
• Extended PC skills, XML knowledge preferred
